A question from a innocent bystander, I am not a dev but what is so bad about MS owning GitHub, I see a lot of developers saying they want to move thier projects to gitlab, why?
I dont know if it's bad, we'll see, but given that the linux ecosystem is the only and real competitor to ms on the cloud stuff, and that a good chunk of open source is on github it's quite understandable i think.

I guess this guy is a ms fake account then LOL:
Linus Torvalds invented Git, there would be no GitHub without Git.

GitHub - torvalds/linux: Linux kernel source tree

    LOL, no fake here.

You must have misunderstood me. I never stated MS has been developing GitHub nor Git, I said MS has been contributing to open source projects hosted on GitHub.

And yes I also happen to know who Linus Torvalds is. Actually I've studied in the exact same university where Linux was invented.

    Åbo Akademi University - Wikipedia

EDIT: or maybe I did misunderstand you. That account on GitHub should be the real deal, as far as I know. The Linux kernel is just a small percentile of what is hosted on GitHub.

I only found defining ms the "Biggest single company open source contributor" a bit of an exageration but nonetheless it's just your view, no offence intended

And if the contest is who studied where another one studied:
I studied in the exat same University where Galileo Galilei studied,
Known for his work as astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, and mathematician, Galileo has been called the "father of observational astronomy",the "father of modern physics",the "father of the scientific method", and even the "father of science".
    I win !

    All the best!

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. You can look it up on Google.

Yes, but the contribution seems not relevat, for now at least, if I think of open source I think about great project like linux, Red Hat, postgresql, python, Libreoffice, etc etc. The contribution may be on areas i do not belong/use, but here's the stats:

I do not see anything relevant from ms, they must swim in the open source waters, for some reason, maybe because of developers developers developers as Satya (?) states in the above interview.

That's a totally irrelevant stat, and only tells the stats about forks.

This is what I mean: Who contributed the most to open source in 2017? Let’s analyze GitHub’s data and find out.

Edit: Here's a more current one: Git Much? The Top 10 Companies Contributing to Open Source

Which company has the biggest contributor count?

Forks are an indicator of the impact/relevance of a project, it is relevant to me.

    From your links:
    Who contributed the most? Google:

Which company has the biggest contributor count?
    Numbers are quite scattered:
    ms contributors in github
    4550, 1303, 16419
Anyway, yes Microsoft(tm) has the most contributors to github as a single company, you are right, I already acknowledged in my previous post; what I mean is that (for now) the contribution to the open source by ms is quite irrelevant for the IT area i'm involved in as a regular user ( Operating System, office work, database), maybe it will be since ms is embracing Open source, good.
