Cumulative Update KB4100403 Windows 10 v1803 Build 17134.81 - May 23

Did you try disabling 3rd party services or the known compatibility issues like ssd/ Avast?
If tweaked properly and cleanly, this build should work fine just as any previous build, my system was installed in 2008 from vista and upgraded continuously without removing any software or customization, works without a hitch, so there's something we are missing here. Although I have a ton of group policy restrictions in place to avoid anything I don't like, and also use windows update mini-tool to disable auto updates and hide any re-occurring re-updates that are installed anyway already. Also, you could try reverting to an older system restore point if you created some, not online but with a recovery disk or from recovery menu. At this point I'm so confident in stability that I rarely backup images to macrium reflect. You also might want to make sure all essential software and drivers are up to date, like nvidia drivers, anti virus version, network driver, and intel system inf update. Station drivers has all of the available releases.

A little recap:
I bought an H.P. Tower Pavilion 570-p076na Desktop PC Windows 10 Home 64-bit in February with a view to embracing the Win10 experience.

I am deeply disappointed with the Cumulative Update procedure with its flawed processes in all of its “bug infested” releases to date,.



Since buying my computer, both the 1709 and 1803 updates failed to install, leaving my system in a start-up and shut-down loop culminating the now familiar M.S. cop out of, “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don’t turn off your computer.”.........

So to my point:
I find it surprising that I was unable to resolve my problem from information revealing itself in this thread, or indeed this forum.

This was the quick and painless remedy for my computer:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. Type the following command, and then press Enter.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Note: It might take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
3. Type the following command and press Enter.
sfc /scannow
Note: It might take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
4. Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.

AT LAST! – all sorted. Now on 1803 (OS Build 17134.81

I think most users here are familiar with these commands, that while helpful, not the issue they experience. Most people with trouble here are way past that step, and experience compatibility issues or 3rd party hardware or software interfering, far beyond your remedy of windows system file integrity. But for beginners, or people that are not tech savvy, who relatively have a clean system, those commands can serve as a first aid solution, along with scanning all drives for errors, i.e. chkdsk c:/f

You are indeed correct that I am not tech savvy, and with that in mind, I found some of the suggested solutions on here for Windows 10 Cumulative Updates not installing way outside my remit – well, for my computer’s issue that is.

I only have a few 3^rd party software installed – CCleaner, Teracopy, ToDo Backup, Ashampoo, VLC, PaintDotNet, Nitro Reader etc.

I still maintain however that the Windows 10 updating process has proved inferior to its predecessors that I have experience with of Win 7 and Win 8.1 - for the casual user anyway. I have made a note of your helpful suggestion: chkdsk c:/f

You are probably a very experienced user, but most gurus on this forum will agree with me that this is a bad, very bad idea. I back up every day with MR and twice a week with EaseUs Todo just in case. A backup is a lifesaver . I cannot count how may times my backup plan had saved my bacon.

If you continue with that trend, one day you will find out that I was right. Don't take any offense at this, since it is just a mere suggestion..

I know, I know, it's simply that I do have backup of a month or so ago and that's enough for me, as I can extract any data I need from the working system and simply return a month or two back. Plus there are system restore points and many ways to save a broken system, such as I am configured to display boot menu each boot and can boot to any recovery option, I have also configured to have LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION present of last two good boots, a feature windows 10 forfeited on. 3rd party boot disks and many more. But you're right, I will image weekly from now on.

EDIT: saw @f14tomcat's post now ,and for hardware failures you better be having a clone of each hardware part you have, specifically motherboard, sitting in storage for a day like that.

Only 1TB? I have five external 8TB drives for my needs, though I must admit I use them way too scarecely
