When I hear the word "emulation" I immediately think of software like Snes9x or ZSNES, which enables you to play Super Nintendo games in Windows.
That is exactly what emulation means in computing. CPU microcode on the other hand determines and manipulates how certain complex instructions are executed by the processor.

I am sorry guys but I am still confused and don't understand exactly about the bios and OS patch! Reading some comments I understood that if your manufacturer provide you with an update bios patch then you don't need the OS patch released by microsoft and you are protected. Is this right or you need both? HP released two bios updates for my laptop to address the issue and I updated my bios. This is what the InSpectre app shows:
    Attachment 189070

I had to manually disable the protections from windows registry : "FeatureSettingsOverride"=dword:00000003
because my pc was too slow! after disabling it was working fast and normal again! If I'm not mistaken I am not protected even if I have flashed the bios with latest patch!?
You got that right, if you manually disable those features (in the registry) even if your CPU microcode is patched to the required level either by (preferably) BIOS or Microsoft KB, you will not be protected.

The protection for Meltdown is apparently possible with just the OS software (not this microcode patch, but OS patches in previous cumulative updates) but Spectre requires the microcode to be in place for the OS protection to be effective. Exactly how much of a performance hit you get depends crucially on which processor you have, some older ones require a lot more work on the OS software side.

Microcode alone isn't sufficient to protect you, but you need the right microcode (in bios or loaded by this update) for the OS protection to be possible.

Did the OS update this morning for Spectre, allready had Meltdown. No slow downs that I can see or feel. I mostly browse and game on this machine.

Only noticed a small delay , 2 seconds, in boot-time.
Also opening eventviewer took some more time , small price for safer OS............!

    I haven't received any microcode patches/updates lately,
    that I'm aware of.
This must mean that I'm protected,
    right?
