So OS hooks disabled (I'm assuming that means the protections buttons are disabled)=OS thinks that Spectre update has not been performed even if it has at BIOS level. This is why people with BIOS updates are still getting the KB uC update which will then detect that it has already been patched to an equivalent or newer version at BIOS level.

Didn't know they revised updates. Also didn't know that the BIOS update did the same thing with regard to the performance penalty. Why is it better for the update to be at that level?

I wonder what would happen if speculative execution was disabled. Would that seal the vulnerability. Obviously that is a ridiculous proposal I'm sure it is some innate part of the processor. Seems like a really cool feature when not being vulnerable.

I remember this coming out, of course major news, don't know why I'm just catching up now just slipped my mind until the update. I hope to find and deliver news of a patch that enhances performance or of the "Intel Free CPU Replacement Program (over four generations of processors). Actually more you said the 10+ year old ones went unpatched. The main thing, I was about to ask you but instead will find in that research (and you sort of answered it with the chronology of generations affected) is how far back this goes. Did it start when speculative execution was introduced. I had thought it started with core but then remember seeing atom or something affected. I still need to figure out how to patch a relative's chromebook with a Celeron dual core 3205U.
Not exactly. Spectre OS switches seem to be just OS memory management changes (just did a bit more reading and made an inference).

BIOS updates are better because they don't rely upon software patches to deliver them (both the Linux and the Windows methodologies are weaker in this regard) wipe the OS and you wipe your protection, until you reenable it in your new OS. On the flipside, OS hooks will catch (and cause a performance penalty) unless you disable them.

If Speculative Execution was disabled, you get the performance penalty all the time. Modern CPU architecture derives it's performance by Speculative Execution during otherwise idle CPU cycles. You can have fast OR secure.

It's an architectural design flaw / premise that reaches as far back as the Pentium Pro of 1998. Speculative Execution has been a thing in other CPU architectures since the 1960s which is pretty much the nascent computer.

Chromebook patches the same way; BIOS/Firmware update or because it's based on Linux, updates to ChromeOS enable Site Isolation and KPTI.

Why would you need KB346084 if the furthest it goes back is Skylake?

Edit: Nevermind, I see that KB is for a different variant of Spectre.

It would seem that KB4346084 is going to give granularity on Spectre patches. They are appearing behind the OS updates, whether this is by accident or design....

...makes me think the revisions to KB409007 and KB4100347 mean another disclosure and patch is imminent.

I'm guessing what you are saying here is that OS level gives the ability to disable protection on the fly.

During my history research I will look into that. I'm again assuming that Speculative Execution then did not have vulnerabilities until '98. Yeah, I just looked up "nascent" I think my assumption is right.

Don't know what KPTI is. Their latest release enables site isolation by default (10% memory hit). Guess I need to figure out how to find/deploy bios updates for it. Thanks for the link! It's an Acer Chromebook 15 a few are listed in the affected devices but not the CB5 version I am looking for. I need to find something similar to InSpectre to run on it.

    KPTI Kernel Page Table Isolation

There is a Spectre checker for Linux so I suppose it should run on Chromebook.

It doesn't matter. You don't have an Intel CPU.
