I have had the same problem on 3 out of 5 pcs. Currently, I have disabled the windows update service until I find a fix

    Hey bro :), yeah ...
Clearly, an unacceptable big mess from ms part...again!
Well, with their weekly rushing it/patching it policy, (lol here), it's no wonder.

Btw standalone update didn't work either for me.

    Hi there
worked fine for me on several computers

amazing that for some it works and for others they seem to get into a hideous mess.

I'm often at a loss to understand why essentially similar bits of hardware yield for different people sometimes catastrophically different results -- but then I've never been at the other end of a service or help desk so I've no idea what some people do to their machines. !!!!!

    cheers

I've deferred updates for 28 days simply because these type of issues seem all to commonplace lately.

Quick thought, and maybe I'm misunderstanding the context of what some are saying, but this:

Windows Insider Program manages this option
which I see in yellow (that doesn't show up well on here) could be taken to mean that the Insider Team decides what frequency they which to use, and not that it is implying that you yourself have somehow got this tied into an insider build. It could just as easily say 'Microsoft will manage this automatically'.

Said it now, carry on :)

Hmm, I don't see any mention of the bug that causes Windows to randomly lock up when using Chrome being fixed. Guess I'll have to wait and see.
reading other forums seems that a lot of users report that problem is fixed with this update

and that it was related to intel integrated graphics 620/630 or similar

In my experience a lot of the update experience issues, [Update not Clean install], are related to mods performed on the system, I'm not saying that all issues are caused by the user, far from it, but I have noticed over many years that the problems are often inversely proportional to the changes made to the system.

Also when you have a new release of Windows and some 3rd party application has issues, it may not be a fault in windows but in the application - Many application developers use tricks not recommended by Microsoft to perform certain functions, and although they will work initially and pass the tests for "Windows Compatibility" a new version of Windows may change slightly Within the parameters of the development rules, but will not work with the application,.

In these cases it's the responsibility of the application developer to correct their code, not Microsoft

I take it Flash updates have to be installed manually now?
Shouldn't have to, according to the KB it's supposed to be automatic through windows update. Having said that, both my machines in my specs below (one x86 Pro, the other x64 Home) fail to see the Flash update for 1803 in windows update.

This appears to be a general problem across other versions too. Running 1709 on my test machine also fails to find several updates, the Servicing Stack update and the Flash update are missed, only the CU was installed.

    Hi folks
Isn't the use of flash being discouraged --security issues etc.
    If it's a depreciated feature I can't see what's wrong with a manual install.

Just my take on it though - as there probably a zillion and one websites out there still relying on it.

    Cheers

Now Windows Update tells me that a restart is pending for the update… But it got installed yesterday, and if I open the log or click about on my PC I can see it got installed. Does this mean that the computer will restart itself later automatically on the same update?

This is exactly my experience too. The less I fiddle with the system, the better success rates I have when updating or upgrading.

So many applications does not follow Windows recommended structures and while working one day, the next they might not work at all.

Lately, only issues I have had is with drivers. Most of them are already 3 years old, and those are the latest. No wonder we sometimes experience instability and crashes, especially when we get a Windows upgrade. Usually these issues gets resolved with a few CU patch, but it should not be MS responsibility to work around driver issues, since they have clearly specced how a driver should look and how it should communicate with different Windows layers.

I tried the same and now I only have the 1st line of red. I'm ready to go back to 1709.
I have gone back to 1709. I will try 1803 again, probably later today once I've gotten 1709 all up to date and made a fresh image. Or maybe I'll wait a bit longer.
