For custom computers temorarily modify the BIOS boot order so that the external USB HD is on top.

Sorry I didn't get back to you before now, I've been away from computer all evening. I hope the tutorial @Kari mentioned was helpful. Using F12 as you did is the only way I've ever got into the boot menu on my Lenovo, and it took a few tries to get the timing right before it would work. Thankfully I haven't had to do it enough to be more familiar with the process.
I have noticed that updates generally take a lot longer on the Lenovo than on the HP. I went through a bad patch of WU problems on the Lenovo a couple of months ago, and the HP has never had any update issues. I don't know if this is characteristic of Lenovo machines, but it will certainly be on my mind the next time I have to replace a computer.

Dian, I have a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 14" Laptop. I'd like to be able to do a clean install on it, but so far, I can't get it to boot from my USB Drive. I looked it up and the instructions said to hit F12 just as the Logo popped up. I did, but it didn't.
I turned off Fast Bootup before trying F12, to no avail. I've tried several times with no results.
Is there some other secret to booting it with the USB Drive?

to get in BIOS Boot menu using F12 or F2 in other PC you can only access it after a power off, so from Windows a Shut Down command.
From a Restart that entry to BIOS is not available.

Holding the shift key while you restart takes you to the advanced boot menu from where you can boot from a CD drive or USB stick.

No, it's the other way round. If Fast Start up is in use (which it is by default) then a Shut Down is a form of hibernation, booting up after that will skip the BIOS screen with the F12/F2 boot choice options.
A Restart on the other hand doesn't use fast start up, it does a full cold boot and you'll get all the BIOS screen options. See the tutorials...

If you have
fast startup turned on, then this option will perform a hybrid shutdown instead of a full shutdown.

Restart will close all apps, sign out all users, and full shutdown and restart (reboot) the PC.

The fast startup setting doesn’t apply to
Restart. You need to shut down and then start your PC again for fast startup to take effect.

Just curious, but did upgrading to FCU cause as many issues for "mortal" users as SCU has been doing lately? People seem top have a lot of BSODs and other weird issues.
Hope we'll get a BIG patch on Patch Tuesday, since a lot is still broken in SCU.
I had more issues with FCU.

I remember this forum seemed to have just as many threads on FCU release. I still think you get less issues if you clean format install.

Yes, I'm anxious to try the tutorial pointed to by Kari; that looks to be easy if it works on this silly little machine.
Thanks for the confirmation that F12 does, indeed, work . . . I'll keep working on holding my mouth right while booting to the USB drive. :)
I was looking for a 14" laptop with a 500 GB hard drive for traveling when this one popped up so I bought it. Slowest booting machine I've ever had . . . It may be built like a tank, but tanks don't have it all!
