    You sneaky beast, you

I suppose we just carry on using our machines as they are then. At least my main desktop is up to date

...the microcode is out there - sooner or later MS will put in in an update for us (won't they?)

Perhaps, but surely that will be the same as with this KB4090007 only it will be wrapped into a CU - as I see it, all we're doing is forcing it without waiting for Windows updates. If that's the case, I cannot see that it'll be any different.

It's being so cheerful that keeps me going!

Just to confirm what it says in the linked thread

    KB4090007 Intel microcode Cumulative Update for Windows 10 v1709 - Page 17 - Windows 10 Forums

"it's an optional update. Upgrading Windows gives you a new 'Software Distribution' folder. You will ALWAYS have to reapply the patch every time there is a feature update. That's why the BIOS method is preferable, it works regardless of OS."

Do we all agree with that?
I have just checked the HP support page and there is nothing yet with regard the BIOS/UEFI update. I don't mind redownloading the microcode update patch every time there is a new feature update. At least for now, the Spectre vulnerability is mitigated on my machine.

BTW: How does the performance thingy work? I see some have "Slower" ?
No idea. I will have to do some research on that one!

NU-UUUH! Not this time! After installing my whole boot sequence was effed-up! (sorry!) Suddenly another drive station had switched places and after installing Windows a-new I found out in the BIOS that something was a-miss!

    I won't risk it!

Please revisit my 2 screen shots from the Intel master List - you will see that both the 206A7 and the 306C3 have the same status. That implies that both have been completed in their turn and that KB4090007 should have the same effect on both. But it doesn't.
You are right about that. This is a bit confusing and can be cause for concern. The only thing I can think of is when one gets to Microsoft Update catalog, there are 4 lines for download one has to be careful which one to pick. Two are for 03-2018 and two are for 04-2018 and each of the four goes either for (x86) or (x64). I was myself a bit hesitant, at first, when I got there until I figured out which one was for my machine. Mistake can happen to anybody. If that is not the case, there is something else under the hood that no one knows yet about..
