Never heard about it before... If it's that old, something should be done with it. Or with Explorer..
I've just loaded up 1507, build 10240 on my test machine - this bug was there from the beginning.

Also, it only applies to the existing folders. Create a new folder in Public and a) it doesn't have 'Public' added at the beginning of its displayed name and b) a copy does get shown as being a copy.

Odd thing is that this bug didn't exist in Windows 7.

Wait, it's not just Public location.. It's Users folders too, and they can be anywhere, as long as they are root "special" - media folders. Should test, if this applies to new libraries too.

It isn't just public or libraries. It happens in %appdata% too.

May not be new but I never noticed it (until I was backing up my start menu shortcuts).

It's the desktop.ini in the folder that shows the display name for the folder in windows. When you do a dir at a command prompt, it doesn't show it. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Nonsense - 3 directories showing the same name when they have different names is a bug. But perhaps it is an old bug in which case they'll never fix it

By the way, this was the desktop.ini for that folder
    Code:
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21786

I deleted it but it made no difference.

...maybe it's just that it's so obscure that no one has reported it in the Hub yet?
It's certainly not as old as Windows 7 (and maybe not in 8, but I don't have that to test).

My own user folder has no desktop.ini - but it still exhibits this bug.

Explains the issue, it's more of a problem when you redirect folders, but if you do a search for kb947222 you'll see it's been a "feature" since Vista.

Also desktop.ini is a hidden system file, so you won't see it by default.

That's not the same bug, though it seems related. This bug is not 'redirection', it's that a copy of a folder has the same displayed name as the original along side it. And as I showed here...
    Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast/Slow/RP Build 17134.5 - April 27-public-7.png
...that didn't happen in Windows 7 - so this particular variant of the bug wasn't 'a "feature" since Vista'.

Anyone see this? Copy paste a folder in file explorer and the "- copy" isn't shown in file explorer.
No idea if this is correlated but last night the "Users" folder showed up on my desktop without copying or moving, it did by itself.
And I had to delete it afterwards.

Try renaming that "Videos - Copy" folder to "Public Videos". You'll then have two folders named the same.
