    Remove specific prevalent malware with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

    Summary

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) helps remove malicious software from computers running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008.

    Microsoft generally releases MSRT monthly as part of Windows Update or as the standalone tool. Use this tool to find and remove specific prevalent threats and reverse the changes they have made (see covered threats). For comprehensive malware detection and removal, consider using Microsoft Safety Scanner.

    This article contains information about how the tool differs from an antivirus or antimalware product, how you can download and run the tool, what happens when the tool finds malware, and tool release information. It also includes information for the administrators and advanced users, including information about supported command-line switches.

    You can manually download the Malicious Software Removal Tool from the Microsoft Download Center. The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

    For 32-bit x86-based systems:
    Download the x86 MSRT package now.

    For 64-bit x64-based systems:
    Download the x64 MSRT package now.

    By the way, for some time now the direct download links have included automatic redirection that cannot be circumvented.

    If you are on a x64 computer, the x86 link redirects to the x64 page and, despite having what appears to be an option to switch, you cannot set it to download the x86 version instead.
    [The Change system control opens a dialog where you can select x86 but, if you do, the Next button refuses to let you proceed any further.]

    If anybody finds a way around this please let me know as I routinely download everything on my day-to-day computer [x64] including updates for my x86 computer.

    No, I can't find a way round it - but I can find an alternative download source.

    You can get both the x64 and the x86 versions direct from the Update Catalog. The x86 version is just called 'Windows Malicious Software Removal tool - June 2018 (KB890830)' while the x64 one is the 'Windows Malicious Software Removal tool x64 - June 2018 (KB890830)'

    For other updates that may be affected this way, search the Update Catalog by their KB number.

    Thanks for that. I must be going daft - I thought I had started using those direct download links because the catalog no longer had KB890830 in it [I use the catalog for all the other MS updates].
