Had a very similar issue:
SOLUTION was:
Finally had a chance to get back to the problem system. Used your solution
Code:
SC config wuauserv start= auto
SC config bits start= auto
SC config cryptsvc start= auto
SC config trustedinstaller start= auto
Took the better part of a minute, but it started rebooting on its own, and both are now installed and registering properly! Thanks much for your help!

I found the last line of the Code above on Microsoft's Help Forums and it was enough to get my new laptop to finally install the March and April updates too.
At the Admin Command prompt I just used the command below and then restarted the Laptop :
SC config trustedinstaller start= auto
While researching the Issue I noticed my desktop hadn't updated either , but it didn't work there , the issue on the Desktop turned out to be that I had installed IM Virtual Disk about 2 weeks ago and it was causing an error due to playing with windows Temp Variables ( I think ). After un-mounting the Ramdisk and uninstalling IM Virtual Disk , I ran WinUpdate and the Desktop Updated to .317 just fine too.

Just in time for a new build upgrade to come along tomorrow (allegedly) to more or less wipe out the need to install these updates in the first place.
Timey Wimey eh :-D.

Exactly!
Now the question is: Do I need to put these services back the way they were? It seems wuauserv and trustedinstaller are normally set to MANUAL.

Interesting.... did you put it back to Manual when finished?

..It seems wuauserv and trustedinstaller are normally set to MANUAL.
Both mine are manual, I've never had cause to change them, but then I've never had an problem with updates. Could be it's a workaround that only a few systems need?

I've only had one system with problems, so I changed the services to auto (as per the fix), and now the updates have installed and registered properly.
But, am wondering if I should change those 2 back to manual, as they would normally be? I'm thinking yes....

The Fix I found on Microsoft Communities did not mention setting it back to Manual , so I am not sure ? I assumed the setting should be on Auto and somehow wasn't.
Windows had tried 24 times to install the March Update as it never seemed to recognize the Restart, and hadn't tried the April Update at all , so I figured it was time to look into it, hopefully this is not a Monthly thing.

The normal setting for that service is Manual. I'm thinking that we don't want it (both of them, for my system) running all the time, unnecessarily. I think I will change mine back to Manual, as they're supposed to be.

so just use :
SC config trustedinstaller start= manual
to switch it back?
what about the other 3 items in the Code you used above? I will need to undo this on my Desktop too as I tried it there, before finding that IM Virtual/Ram Disk was the Issue with updates on it.
