Well, a good bit of your speed is now relegated to your download speed. Mine still took far longer to DL than it should have - I have a 330Mbps pipe (that routinely shows well above 360) meaning I should be able to sustain, a tthe bare minimum, 25 MB/s - which, for 5 GB worth of files, means it should take around 200 seconds. Let's say for the sake of argument that we double that - 400 seconds to download (6 minutes and change). then it still takes a good while performing the initial installing step - far too long, IMO.
XP was murder. Plus the need to routinely disable AV software....
I always installed the SP first before attempting to even connect to Windows Update. Made life a heck of a lot easier.
I did SP first (with XP, I just installed SP2 over clean XP install until I finally built an XP install disc with SP2 integrated, and with Win7, I just downloaded the updated 7 install disc with SP1 integrated when I still had my TechNet account active).
