my system has updated to 16299.309 but i keep getting a failed Windows Defender update error

    "
Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Definition 1.263.659.0) - Error 0x80070643"

i tried many fixes including reinstalling windows 10 (keeping programs, files & settings) but no change..
if i try to update directly from defender i get "error code - 2147023293 ...Fatal error during installation"

Disk Cleanup of system files is also problematic & doesn't complete on its own.. has to be stopped & restarted numerous times but ultimately seems to delete the required files..

since i reinstalled windows 10.. do you think it's a setting that was retained from previous install that is stopping it from working? i've wasted hours on this and i've hit the wall.
Are you using a third-party A-V software besides Windows Defender?. If so, try to uninstall it and run adwCleaner (it's free & safe from MBAM) to eliminate the possibility of malware infection. After that, I would suggest resetting Windows Update. Check the following links:

Try updating definitions from the Windows Defender Security Centre instead.

Back in April last year this error code was due to a problem at Microsoft's end for one particular definitions update.

Disk Clean-up is known to take a very long time on 'cleaning updates' under some circumstances. If you have the patience just leave it running, it will complete eventually (hours later, occasionally).

There's no predictable pattern to this, but it seems to only happen after certain cumulative updates - and even then not for everyone. You know you're in for the long haul when Disk Clean-up says there are 3.99TB that can be cleaned.

    no 3rd part A-V installed..
i ran adwCleaner.. it found and removed 1 PUP
i did the windows reset batch file from Brink earlier and neither have made any difference.
i have also tried the following:
tried Elevated Command prompt with below commands:
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -RemoveDefinitions -All (this worked ok)
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -SignatureUpdate (this failed - ERROR: Signature Update failed with hr=80070643) is this a clue ?
i tried manual update via "mpam-fe.exe" but error remains
i tried windows update trouble shooter.. it finds issues.. repairs them but Defender won't install the definition
tried DISM restore health and SFC/scannow but no issues found
    reset firewall.. no change

Where SFC and DISM fail to repair an issue, an in-place repair install can often solve it (it can keep all your installed apps, files and most settings).

This tutorial will show you how to do a repair install of Windows 10 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything.

    Bree,

regarding the Repair Install, i did that also.. twice (not be be confused with the reset which wipes just about everything)

what about this part i mentioned earlier..
    “%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -SignatureUpdate
this command failed - i got following error: "Signature Update failed with hr=80070643"
    is this a clue ?

i appreciate your suggestions as i'm out of ideas..

Not an error I've encountered, but apparently others have. This example was from 2010, so not directly applicable in W10. It says .NET Framework can be a cause.

well now the problem has just fixed itself.. updates are going in ok and no error messages..
i suspect they were always going in but win 10 had itself in a muddle..
hopefully it stays ok from now on
