Looking further into the event logs I saw other weird issues. Multiple explorer.exe faults, the user account couldn't be found in the registry...
The lack of a user would explain why it ran the 'first sign-in animation' - and why 'It's taking a bit longer than expected....'

Macrium Reflect - again my hero.
Great news @Farvatten, you can never have enough backups. :)

I'm concerned as to what may have corrupted the registry, it seems unlikely that this update would have done that. My first step would be chkdisk /f /r but that's really a conversation for a thread of its own.

3 completed via Windows Update, 4 more to go. Better than the last ones which had to be done manually via the msu download.

3 of the 4 say "Up to Date", doing it manually.

The only noticeable pattern is it appears that the oldest computers (more than 9 years) have to be done manually.

Be afraid...be very afraid... ....watch them screw this up too. I get nervous every time I boot up to see if my keyboard is working. Updating an OS should NOT be messing with USB wired devices. Makes me so angry.

This one already superceded by KB4090914, must have been a bug. KB4090913 probably incorporates KB4090914 by now.

KB4090913 installed and running fine. One strange think that happened was my Edge browser setting changed to not allow any cookies, but I was able to manually change that.

One question I do have is from KB4058258 that originally was stuck in "needs a restart" , today I looked and it's showing "failed to install" Do I need to concern myself with that or does the newer Cumulative updates supersede this ?

No need to worry about KB4058258 anymore with KB4090913 installed. :)

Ooooh-KAY?! Now that was a bit of a straaaaange install... Kept on falling back halfway to 1 % en krept on to 64%... Falls back to 1%, then to 54%, falls back again to 1% and finally reaches 100% where it sits for a few seconds... and completes the installation...
Mine did that too. Went to 60% and stalled. While I was trying to download/install the stand alone update the auto update fell back to 34% and when the stand alone failed to install - the automatic update went back to 60% and FINALLY finished. When I restarted it, the process completely relatively quickly but message box popped up that Personalized settings were not responding. I thought "RUT ROH". I wanted so badly to turn it off but instead I left the room for a few minutes
and when I came back it was booting properly.
