    Glad to see MS resumed its work on this KB. I thought they had stopped after supporting only the last few CPUs made by intel, when actually it seems they were testing more and (probably) making sure they were stable on the os-side, hence the longish wait. Way to go MS. As of now yours is the only safe way to be protected against spectre and meltdown without having to wait for a bios update from the OEMs that will probably never come or meddling with a risky homemade frankenbios.

    Frankenbios is an exaggeration. They're modular by design and already contain older microcodes.

    Anyone with access to the correct tools can easily update a UEFI/BIOS image.

    With a suitable flag set in the BIOS, downgrading is also possible.

    @winactive
    well "easily" is definitely not the word i'd use. Sure using ubu tool is just a matter of making the right choices on the keyboard but it's what comes after that's more delicate. For instance some boards such as the latest Asus ones have got an integrity protection which prevents the user from flashing a custom bios with the ez-flasher tool. In short, bios modding it's something that should never be taken lightly as the risks of bricking are always present, and furthermore it's not something for the common peer, as it requires some knowledge and studying to understand how it all works and how to proceed. This method by MS is definitely the safest one as it doesn't require any particular skill from the user besides being capable of installing an update, plus it could also be pushed automatically by the IT department to any and all pcs connected on a network in a workplace environment.

    Very nice! I've just patched an old Acer with a core i 4000 series CPU :)

    I wonder though, since this update doesn't come via automatic updates, when we get 1803 will we have to download and install this again?

    Yes, it's an optional update. Upgrading Windows gives you a new 'Software Distribution' folder. You will ALWAYS have to reapply the patch everytime there is a feature update. That's why the BIOS method is preferable, it works regardless of OS.

    Glad this was optional. I installed it on my i7-5960x with a 1080ti card and it absolutely destroyed playback of Netflix movies in Edge (stuttering) and Adobe Premiere. Uninstalled and everything is good again.

    I have to quit reading this forum.

    Your profile doesn't show what version of Windows you are running, nor your Nvidia driver. The patches are for v1709 and the GeForce 390.65 and higher.

    Yes, I'm on v1709 and on 390.65 I checked all that before I installed. Still had problems. Not going to bother with it anymore. Thanks.
