I really hope they move away from silly names using seasons which are not only US centric (Fall, Autumn in virtually rest of English language speaking world), but hemisphere centric (Spring is Autumn in Southern hemisphere). What happens in September - do we call it Fall Creators Update II (the sequel)?

The excessive use of term Creators is also now getting ridiculous. We are not all "artists". If anything, name sends out message OS is for people to mess around rather than use as a serious productivity tool.

Even android has a better albeit slightly daft alphabetical naming convention.

Why can't they simply use Mar18, Sep18 etc.

I guess whilst we are expected to eat cat flavoured tacos from far east, and dance to the "Hustle" by the present immature leadership, we cannot expect anything logical or sensible.

Why not just use the numbers, 1607 - 0703 - 1709 - 1803 at lest they "alphabetize " without any faffing around - The closest I think I got to "Fall Creative Update" was "FCU 1709".

I seem to recall that the UK release version of the FCU was known as the Autumn Creative Update - for less than a week - when it reverted to Fall Creative Update to save "confusion"

Using the terms Autumn (Fall) is prone to issues of it's own - Meteorologists, (weather persons), use one date and Astronomers, (Stars), use another later date. Nature itself uses a fuzzy logic that can see Migrating Birds in full Autumn / Winter plumage at the start of August as they moult into the winter plumage on the breeding grounds before heading South

To say nothing about other languages "Пролећни Креативни додатак" in Serbian.

Agreed but just numbers is slightly less intuitive to some. It would have benefit that that is what winver returns anyway.

Present naming is just trying to make it sexy when a new build is released.

    So far

    RTM - no real name
    TH2 - no real name
    AU - Anniversary Update
CU - Creators Update (March 2017)
FCU - Fall Creators Update (Sept 2017)
SCU - Spring Creators Update (Mar 2018)?

    Current naming is a mess!

    Google translates that as

    Spring Creative Supplement

Sounds like some kind of aphrodisiac!

YYYYMM (and perhaps DD) is the way forward when it comes to sorting dates. @Kari described the current convention:

Microsoft has publicly announced that feature upgrades will be in September and March, each year. The next Windows 10 versions will be 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2003, 2009 and so on (YYMM, two digits for year, two digits for month).
I'll tell you what - I'm happy running version called 1709 - the year the hot air balloon was invented (apparently)

There is a problem with it though. Come October 2020 will MS really want to call their version 2009? It would sound like the latest version was 11 years out of date

I am convinced that Microsoft will rethink version naming and numbering in next year or two. They will most probably stay in twice a year feature upgrade cycle, though, it's just the names and numbers they must should rethink.

May not sound glamorous but Redstone or just Rs1,2,3,,4,5,x is good enough for me.

    I agree with you both. Perhaps just Windows 11, 12, 13, 14 etc. Or Windows 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc.

Just some easy to understand sequential number (where they could easily say only the last 2 or 3 are supported).

The current triple system of versions (1703), builds (17101) and code names (FCU) is not clear to anyone who isn't following their naming conventions.
