Protect your Windows devices against Spectre and Meltdown
-
I got an e-mail from HP last night (Critical Alert) telling me that the patch for my 5 years old laptop is ready. I updated the bios and all is working perfect. But to be honest I am a little skeptical and maybe even regret patching it. I wonder if as a private user who browses few sites and do some gaming it was worth the performance loss. The intel mess up downgraded these older computers and pushed them back as if they were another year or 2 years older.

My PC seems to be protected, and that is with the ASUS 1003 BIOS from 2. January :)

Hi,
Micro code updates are still in beta testing for a large number of cpu's.
There's good chance that once Intel gives MS the green light these updates will come in the form of a KB just as they have done for most of the Skylake cpu's.
The older the cpu the more likely this scenario is going to be as OEMs can no longer be bothered to update these BIOS's etc.
Cheers,

Hmmmm.
Hey Shawn,
This Spectre crap is getting to be so bad, that Judas Priest had to sing about it on their newest album that came out a short time ago

Just a note about the video, if you have seen the videos of example of meltdown/spectre being used to access the CPU's memory, and how picture and video files look, it's like in this video.
Also listen to the lyrics.
