I will definitely make an image before applying the second Windows Patch which is supposed to be out tomorrow. Intel is making me quite upset about this as it seems that EVERY PC has a vulnerability and they are not talking about it.

I ran into this very problem earlier today with an old HP laptop running a toasty old Athlon X2 CPU. After a fresh install of Windows 10 I was planning to use it for playing around with the latest Windows Insider release but KB4056892 has stopped me in my tracks for the reasons reported above. Windows successfully installs the patch but then hangs on the restart. Removing the patch (or stopping it from installing in the first place) seems to be the only way to restore functionality.
It's no big deal as the laptop is not my main computer but now I'm wondering if Windows Insider Preview 17063 is going to suffer from exactly the same problem, in which case I'll probably just wait until Microsoft patches the patch!

I had the same problem on an Athlon X2 CPU. I had to invoke Automatic Repair to revert the update. I've now hidden the update using the method in this tutorial Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10
I'll unblock the update when I hear MS bother to fix the problem they should have spotted if their QA was any good. I saw another post on the forum today saying MS has now suspended the update for these CPUs anyway.

@Steve C - can you supply a link to that other post please. Having a machine with that issue I'm following most of them but can't find the info saying that MS has suspended the update. and I'd like let all my machines go for the next (Patch Tuesday) CU on which is due imminently. Thanks

Emergency Windows Meltdown patch locks some AMD PCs into endless loop - TechRepublicA Windows patch to reduce the risk from exploits for the Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws is reportedly preventing PCs with older AMD processors from booting.
The recent update, KB4056892, seems to be causing problems for computers running on Athlon X2 processors.
Despite being older machines, the CPUs date from about the mid-to-late 2000s, users say their PCs were running Windows 10 without issue before installing the update.
After installing the update users say their PCs are unable to boot and eventually get stuck in an endless loop, as they try to roll back to an earlier version of the OS.
Some users report they were able to block the update by using the Hide/Show troubleshooter, as outlined here, but Microsoft is yet to provide official guidance for affected users.
