The Surface Pro 3 is an Atom-based architecture which is waaay different from the ULV i3/i5/i7 they used on the Pro models of the same vintage. I don't know enough about that architecture to know if it is subject to the Intel flaws, and the "Surface 3 help" page says zilch about those vulnerabilities. The "Surface 3 update history" page shows the most current item as Sept. 27, 2016, so my guess is that MS is not supporting this machine any more. I remembered something grisly on this front, and sure enough, here's a despressing little item from Engadget whose title says it all "Microsoft: No more Windows 10 upgrades for some Atom-based PCs."
But even though the Surface 3 has a Cherry Trail rather than a Clover Trail CPU model, I see no signs that MS is doing much with updates for that platform, if anything at all. Ouch!

Thanks a lot ED , appreciate it..... I had actually heard that the Atom PCs wouldn't be updated any longer too but to my surprise it is still getting all Win10 updates .... though it was updated to 1709 ( 16299.192) months behind my other PCs it has happened.

Personally I am hoping it doesn't need the Update being an ATOM CPU as I don't want it to get any slower.....

I am disappointed there have been no updates for it since 2016 for sure .... I was told originally the battery could be replace for $200 to when needed in the future ....that was "Sales Speak" too it will cost at least twice that and there is a high likelihood of the glass breaking.

HP released updated BIOS for my Elitedesk today. I'm all green regarding Get-SpeculationControlSettings.

    Hi,

Don't worry about it, done that hundreds of times. The main thing that can have it go south is a sudden power outage or "unthoughtful" user interference.
In almost all cases the machine can be revived by reflashing its bios/uefi or like I mentioned, recovery through jumper settings on the mainboard or whatever the OEM has come up with though.
But frankly, I've never had it go wrong. Not even in the 30 years I'm into PC's.

    Cheers,
Thanks for the reassurance. I am a bit less scared. :)

    Hi,

Most of Intel's partner OEM's have not offered anything yet and Intel themselves haven't updated the microcodes for their CPU's yet either.
Rumour has it microcode updates won't cut it either but we'll see what shows up.

    Nope

    Yes.

    Cheers,
Thanks fdegrove. I had read I think on the HP forum and a few other places that people were getting OEM bios updates from asus and dell released in past few days that patched up the problem already and that intel had issued the fix to OEM manufacturers. Maybe they were mistaken (just a latest bios release?) or it was regarding a different issue - perhaps that ime issue.

    Thanks for adding that Brink.

It is about Spectre and Meltdown. Links to OEM are in link in the first post.

Here is a link to relevant HP document, where most of computers from last years are listed with information when the updated BIOS will be (or is already) posted:

That's good. I don't think I see mine listed at all.. (HP-15 F018dx).. I see some HP 15's but not that model sequence..unless I missed it or am misunderstanding it. It is a few years old and out of warranty. I've read some people say on the forum that HP may not update bios on older out of warranty laptops but they did recently update HP 15 bios (offered for my model) in November so maybe they can do it again?

Anyway, I'll check around 2/15 to see if anything becomes available since that seems to be the time for these other HP-15 models.

Not sure what to think of HP right now ....
Grabbed the new bios for my Hp Envy 17 from the link, which says it's F.55 (Jan. 2018). When I ran the SP84194.exe, I noticed the setup says F.14 and doesn't list my model and if I continue it says "The bios update is blocked for this device" ... gotta be wrong link to the wrong bios

    I'm currently running F.54 (Nov. 2017)
