It's making registry changes (as Winaero's tweaker does) or as in the Tutorial here on disabling Windows updates (Option 1 Step 6)

Note- if you want to 'install' something in a zip file that's not intrinsically installable, use NirSofer's zipinstaller.

Thanks for the quick response but are we confusing 2 different things?
The Local Group Policy Editor settings you illustrate, I’ve always had on my PRO machines set from:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update.

I have it set to “2 = Notify before downloading and installing any updates.”

Your screenshot looks the same and this does what I expect it to do. As we know, this is an integral part of Windows and is what your linked tutorial explains. I set mine before updating from Win 7 to Win 10, and it has remained set throughout all the various Win 10 versions.

I was actually asking about the Freeware prog Windows Update Mini Tool and how IT runs when an update is detected to allow me to block individual updates when notified. I have mine set to Notify for all Update Services (see attached screenshot) but I don’t understand how it notifies unless I run the tool manually.



Also, Local Group Policy Editor is good for Windows Pro, but I also have a Windows Home system, which is where the MiniTool is hopefully of more use.

After doing the above, whenever there are updates, you will get a popup notification that there are updates to install. Run the MiniTool & check for updates

Finally, if you like Windows Update MiniTool, there is another utility called Windows Update Integrator which makes it possible to catch the Windows Update notification popup, meaning when you click on the Windows Update desktop notification it opens up Windows Update MiniTool instead of Windows Update section of Settings app.

A word of caution. Windows Update MiniTool requires Windows Update service to download updates from Microsoft. So if you have disabled Windows Update, please enable it.

OK - sorry - I was being very dense indeed!

I (mis) interpreted that as meaning that the MiniTool somehow automatically found the updates and issued a popup notification.

Obviously, one already gets the popup notification from Windows update itself, so its at that point that one runs the MiniTool manually to determine what to do with any offered updates. And I presume, that THEN any updates you mark as "hidden", remain hidden?

You can also control the general behavior of Automatic Updates for Windows – you can set Automatic Updates mode to disabled, notification only, managed by administrator, automatic and scheduled.

- now here's where one user could NOT make Notify work in home (registry mod) - but another could - hence my question... I'm just wondering whether MS has begun to close the option on Notify for Home users... (I don't have anything to try that on).

So essentially, it only acts on updates that have currently been offered for download. I was rather hoping for a panacea that blocked all future updates until you allowed them. (I don't want much, do I? )

Of course one has nearly that functionality in Pro using the Policy Editor we discussed above. And, as I understand it, even adding the integrator still requires one to click on the notification when it appears.

The only question now hangs over what will happen with Windows Home?

UPDATE - I seem to have cross-posted with your # 354, however Brink's Tutorial option 2 states:

This option will not work in Windows 10 Home. Microsoft has prevented disabling automatic updates in the Home edition.
This option will only work in the Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions.


Of course, as I advised someone with Home, setting the WiFi or Network connection as "Metered" blocks big downloads anyway! But what will the MiniTool do with Home?

Disabling updates is much harder now in Home (the old registry trick doesn't work with Home). Hence the comment in Brink's tutorial- which refers to disabling, not setting Notify as I read it. There is a more arcane method to disable updates in Home.
