    According to other members in this Forum, it seems that turning off your anti-virus or disabling it won't let you install the latest update KB4056892. The trend is to completely uninstall your ant-virus, reboot and check for Updates again.
    A friend of mine has Norton and her PC has updated and Norton didn't stop it. I've read about anti virus need to put something in our registry or Microsoft wasn't going to send the update, but I did receive it. I have a AMD processor and also read about the problems there too. I may go to the catalog and see if I can download and install from there. Thanks for your time to answer me.

    I have been following this thread since the very start and that's what has come to my attention for members using a third-party anti-virus. I didn't face this problem since I am using Windows Defender from MS. Thanks for sharing my opinion. :)
    Some AVs have fared better than others, Norton fixed the problem on day 1 as did Malwarebytes.

    The problem seems to be occurring mostly with Avast A-V as mentioned indirectly by @kado897 in his post #332. With regard to the registry key needed and its values, you can have a look at my post #256 (so does post #279). Lastly, going to MS's Update Catalog is probably your best bet if "Checking Updates" doesn't come up with anything (see also post# 258)

    It was fixed by ESET on the first day as well. Earlier on pre-release versions.

    I tried to update from the catalog and it still want install-Gets to 99% and all it will do. I can't even turn my computer off without something trying to install. Update ...4517 still trying to install. Then it shows up that a have update for....6892. I don't know how to stop ...4517 from trying to install all the time, and with both of these updates trying to install I know which one is attempting to install. I looked at the post that was recommended and I still don't any more than I did before I looked. I haven't a clue where to even look for Registry Editor. I've sent a message to my AV and ask if they had did the registry update. Don't know how to stop the ..4517 update from trying to install all the time.

    Yes, ESET response was quick. They fixed the problem with their Antivirus and antispyware scanner module update 1533. 3

    In the Thread Bree Posted about in #315 ( pg 32) Avast has discovered that some versions of their Software do not have their MicroUpdates enabled , so the registry value doesn't get written .

    Running the Avast /debug command seemed to add it to mine as mention in that thread..... it seems to run an update during debug looking at the code in the CMD Window.... at least for me.... and others....

    Info from that thread

    It depends on how much AvEmUpdate.exe log output I get

    if "Current update version" >= 324, then it is delivered

    If log output doesn't contain "Current update version", I have to check last delivered CAB signature for update version. Please note that LastAppliedPatchId is different value from "Current update version", and is not relevant.

    I have Current Update Version 324.

    The registry setting was not there until I ran c:\program files\avast software\avast\avastemupdate.exe /debug from an elevated command prompt.

    So do the following if needed....

    Open an Admin command prompt in the folder C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\

    type or copy/paste : AvEmUpdate.exe /debug (hit enter if needed , may run on its own on pasting)

    or try avastemupdate.exe /debug if above fails to work..

    hit any key to Exit and check the registry entry at: ( i didn't need a reboot but YMMV)

    Folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat
    Value Name="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc"
    Type="REG_DWORD”
    Data="0x00000000” (0)

    First off, you have to make sure that you have the registry key QualityCompact and its values in right pane. I am just asking, since you didn't make any mention thereof. If you don't, you won't get the update. On the other hand, if you do, try to troubleshoot Windows Updates and check for updates after that. If after all these considerations, you still cannot install the update, that could mean that you will have to wait (here I have to say that I didn't check your computer's Specs, but MS has halted Security updates for selected AMD devices). I really like your post. It's is very informative and I am pretty sure it's going to help other members in this forum who make use of Avast. On my part, I am only using Windows Defender and I do have the registry key QualityCompact and its values in right pane. That's why I could have installed the update without any hiccup. Like I mentioned in my previous post, it would be a good idea to check out this link with regard to Spectre and Meltdown:

    I've checked with my antivirus and they have applied the fix with the registry. Since I have a AMD machine, I'm wondering if I even attempt to download this patch. I've saw where Microsoft has stopped sending out this update. I did get it, but wondering if I should try to install, since it is messing up some people's computers.
