It's an hour past the usual release time and still no sign of a new CU - not in windows update or even in the Update Catalog.

Looks increasingly likely it was released a week early.
    and pulled.

No, it's not pulled. I did a clean install of 1709 on an elderly AMD system about 12 hours ago and that got KB4056892 through windows update. Likewise, I'm currently updating my test machine's images. the 1607 one just got the equivalent 2018-01 cumulative update.

It's just been blocked for some AMD processors, not all processors - from your link...
Microsoft has determined that some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations...

I decided to remove Avast Internet Security from my system this morning as there was still no sign of KB4056892.

KB4056892 has finally downloaded and installed this evening along with the other usual monthly stuff.

Perhaps Avast was the problem preventing KB4056892 downloading even though it's been updated and is now supposedly compatible?

You may not have received the 'microupdate' that was issued about 5 days ago...

I thought it was about the prevoius update KB4054517. Well maybe they still did not fix it.
it sounds similar enough... i was guessing they didn't update the kb number (on the official site and build number here).

.. did you have problem with the previous update?

I forced that microupdate and checked the registry entry on the day it was issued and I've been twiddling my thumbs ever since.

I would guess that something is not right with Avast as a number of Avast users are still reporting that they have still not seen KB4056892 despite having the microupdate and registry entry on their system.

Uninstalling Avast will prove it one way or another. If you do make sure you run avastclear.exe in safe mode afterwards to clean out the crap it leaves behind.
