Just chiming in with my experience - I use AVAST (free) on two of my three laptops - the one without AVAST got the update - the two with AVAST would not update - I checked the reg key and all was as it should be for them to update. Finally I uninstalled AVAST and WU immediately updated both machines without any problems. I'm not seeing any performance issues with this update.

    Yes I do.
I downloaded the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog last week. There's not much you have to do. It comes with an installer. That having been said, I can't guarantee that it will go just as smoothly on your computer as it did on my computer.

The update hasn't come through yet on my Asus laptop and my parents' Acer desktop, I'm guessing Avast Antivirus is the culprit. My computer does have the right registry key (haven't checked the other computer yet) so I thought I could use the Update Catalog but I'm a little nervous, never had to install an update this way before. Does anyone have any advice? Is this really simple and I'm just overthinking it?
Have a look at my posts #256 and #258. According to your own post, you seem to be OK for #256 (right registry key with its required values in right pane). All you have to do is #258. :)

If it hangs on 99%, unplug network cable, replug & wait 1 minute. It starts to complete download & start installation.
(As far as I know I have not reset anything).

I installed the update on my laptop and everything went well. The process was very simple but I wanted to make sure before I tried it in case I messed something up. A lot less stressful than going through WU.

Thanks to both of you for the help!

Now hopefully the piece of junk Acer goes just as well.

Hello. Today received an update KB4056892, installed it, but WU history says it failed with code 0x80070643. However in the system information my build is now 16299.192. When i select Check for Updates there are no updates available. So the update is installed fine actually?

How can I get rid of this piece of update and never get it to install again?

WU history says it failed with code 0x80070643
Suggest you run some checks.. see e.g.
Error Code 0x80070643 6 Ways to Fix in Windows
    - there are plenty of search results for that error number.

    E.g.
SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt.

Having not been offered this by Windows Update and thus feeling left out, and noting the comments about Avast (free) which I have, I updated my image, downloaded and installed it manually. Seems ok.

Note: disabling Avast shields and running Windows Update didn't help- I didn't really think it would though.
