There is absolutely no incentive for any motherboard manufacturer to issue updated BIOS for any board that are no longer being made so it's very unlikely to happen unless Intel agree to fund the work required.
It may actually work out a lot cheaper for Intel to fund the work than the outcome of the pending lawsuits already lodged against them and the many which are sure to follow.
My Dell XPS13 9350 lists KB4056892, installs it and asks for a reboot. During reboot it only says "Restart" on the blue screen (not the usual percent count of the update). After the reboot I get a message that the update could not be installed. The laptop functions normally and still shows build 16299.125 When I open settings / update, it again shows KB4056892 asking for a reboot to finish installation. This continues indefinitely.
Also tried installing the download (both cumulative and delta) from windows update. Same behaviour.
Does anyone have a suggestions?
It’s kinda true/not true. Back in the day, it was a bit more risky. I’ve always updated my BIOS the same way I’ve kept all other software updated on my PC. Never a problem. Often they bring better RAM compatibility and CPU support, with the occasional bug fix. Sometimes they’ll remove features.
Read the change log before updating. If you’re upgrading your CPU/RAM at some point, it’s always a good idea to check if your new stuff is supported with your particular BIOS revision. You don’t want to have ti reinstall your old CPU just to update BIOS because it won’t boot with new CPU. Kinda sucks the fun out of the experience:)
The biggest risk during a BIOS update is a power outage/brown out. That’ll brick your board. You can avoid that by using a UPS. Everyone should use those. They’ll save yiour hide one day.

Updating the micro code of a CPU does not in any way affect the machine's BIOS/UEFI.Thanks to @MartinMDL for responding but I'm still a little dubious about any 3rd party s/w that is designed to modify the BIOS! The likelihood of "bricking" the PC seems all too real.
Still, afaik micro code updates for the current security issues are not available yet a few exceptions notwithstanding.

I think the last time I did a BIOS update was on my old Dell desktop which came with a FREE upgrade from XP to Vista and that was all automated as part of the upgrade process, but that was a CURRENT machine at the time...Would agree with this.

Out of interest I have just checked the HP website, there is a message regarding the issue but as suspected the last BIOS update was last year...
All this talk of lawsuits is silly. Many items in life have design flaws, and after a reasonable warranty period has expired, there is no legal obligation to retroactively fix things.Would agree with this.

Even if item's flaw is detected in the warranty period, the companies normal obligation is only to inform and take reasonable steps to fix issue. Companies cannot be held for consequential losses except it is proven that the design flaw was deliberately overlooked, and even then it would be difficult to prove.
