thanks for the prompt reply tomcat. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Asus has yet to release a Bios Update for my mobo. I'm highly doubtful it will ever happen, but remain hopeful nonetheless. I think the next best thing to do is to update the CPU microcode, which is something the user can autonomously do, without the needing to wait for MOBO manufacturers to issue updates, as long as intel deploys the newer ones of course

Probably unlikely anything over a couple of years old is likely to get a bios update.
Also unlikely we are going to see any new processors without the problem until stocks of the latest ones have depleted unless Intel do a recall.
Question is if it wasn't for the paranoia created by certain media sources, would anyone have ever known about let alone exploited the flaws? I suspect not.

Nothing regarding the bios from Asus for my Z170P, I suspect my other boards are too old so not going to worry about it, don't keep anything worth stealing on computers or any important passwords.

Brick to me means that one can no longer install an OS so to be worthless as a brick. Borked is another thing. It's recoverable. A PITA, but recoverable.

I used the term Brick, because it wouldn't go past checking the BIOS. It just froze at the Dell logo screen.

Quick question, I hope. Last night the computer indicated it needed a restart for the update. I did so and it seemed to restart and install. All the please wait and 1 of 2 stuff. After I went to Update History an it indicated that KB4056892 had failed to install. I ran an update check and it indicated no new updates. Ran the manual install for this version and while installing it indicated that it was checking for updates and then that I had them all.
Any way to check if I have the correct updates?

Anyway, shoud you guys need it, here are the latest official intel cpu microcodes, dated 11/2017, which can be updated under windows via a simple program called VMWare Cpu Microcode Update Driver. Download links for both to follow:

THIS ^^^ is the type of post that makes Ten Forums the first site a log on to when I wake up, and the last thing I read before I call it a night. From the above link, VMware CPU Microcode Update Driver, I was able to download both the Intel microcode for my Intel Core i5-3320m processor and the software to install the microcode update. Instructions are on the above linked page and are a breeze to follow. Worked a treat for my laptop. I had to follow this procedure because my laptop is 5 years old and Dell hasn't released a bios update in over 2 years.

Meltdown can’t be fixed with microcode.

Why have a PC then? I agree with not keeping a txt file on your pc with all your passwords. I keep mine in a book. If you’re going to have online accounts, your passwords are going to have to pass through your PC.

As for your pics, dox, etc. they’re just going to be on there and whatever happens happens....

All you can do is keep your OS/apps up to date, properly secure your PC with antimalware/adblocker/firewall, do regular backups and hope for the best.

Nothing is 100%. A major flaw with AMD CPUs could be announced tomorrow.
