    Confusion about Defender?

Clean installed 16299.15 on a brand new SSD drive (few hours ago) and there was an issue with Defender. Not an error nor the one mentioned above, just failed to download.

Then, got the updates across old UI << MSASCui.exe >>. There seems to be no bug.

    Antimalware Client Version: 4.12.16299.15

    Engine Version: 1.1.14405.2
    Antivirus definition: 1.259.272.0
    Antispyware Definition: 1.259.272.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 2.1.14202.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 118.2.0.0

For the rest, it is a perfect installer, Legacy or UEFI. Start menu multiple issues is gone now.

You still seem to be missing the Antimalware Client. That won't come with the manual download of the definitions. Might want to investigate some more.

IronZorg: Thanks, greatly appreciated. I shall get to it tomorrow, today is just too late, I'm too frustrated, etc.

Meanwhile, some progress. I found a suggestion to run sfc /scannow, which I ought to have thought of. For the first time ever for me, it found and replaced some files. It gave a location for the log, which I opened and quickly closed. I can read some medieval manuscripts, I can write and edit fire service training manuals, among my other weird capabilities, but reading that log does not fit into my skill set.

Having done that, I again ran the Windows Update troubleshooters, and knew immediately that something had changed, as it went into an apparently serious rebuilding of the Windows Update Database. It said to restart, but first it finished another part of its procedure, and gave some now-forgotten error message.

Rebooted, which of course failed. Reran troubleshooter, with again a forgotten error message, but I told it to skip the step about finding and starting pending updates. Not sure now just what I did next, but at some time I did a search for how to remove pending updates. Went to the folder, nothing there except an empty subfolder. I have no idea where the pending update file is located, as it is not where I was told it could be found

I forgot this, so here I shall add that I ran sfc /scannow a second time, which did not report any action taken.

Tried another restart, failed. Just before logging on here, after I had removed the empty subfolder, in Windows software distribution\ downloads, I reran the troubleshooter, and for the first time, it shows Potential Windows Update Database fixed and Windows Update Components Must Be Repaired, also fixed. Checked Windows folder, the subfolder I removed had be recreated, which might be what that second 'fixed' referred to.

Again, thanks, and having looked up "Zorg," I shall Groz....
I don't know, but my gut feelings are telling me you are close to resolving your issue. One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is that sometimes the Windows software distribution/Download folder can get corrupt. That maybe the case for the issue you are facing. So, I would suggest that you "Delete" everything in that folder. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. LeftClick on the latter to open it. After that, press Ctrl + A to select everything inside the download folder and press delete on your keyboard or right-click on the selected files & subfolders and click on Delete . Don't worry, you can safely delete all files and subfolders inside the Download Folder. Windows will take care of rebuilding it.

After that, go to Search (lower left close to the Windows logo button) and Type "Disk Cleanup". When the results appear, hold the Ctrl + Shift buttons while left clicking on Disk Cleanup results. That should open disk cleanup with admin privileges. Let it run. When finished, try to troubleshoot Windows Updates one last time. And finally check again for Updates to see what gives.

I understand that you are frustrated for now, but I am really looking forward to seeing your issue resolved. Don't forget to post back tomorrow.

    run Win + R + C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

when I saw << failed to download >>. That was near the end of the update process (driver's were in).

Things are back to normal now.

    Thanks for replying,

I wrote that I had emptied the Download folder.

I started Disk Cleanup, which had only selected thre items to clean, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Device drive packages and Thumbnails; should I also select any other things to clean up?

I join you in looking forward to solving the problem. Constant restarts that don't accomplish anything are not particularly entertaining.

    ===
Later; I am now officially confused (as if that were unusual) I found a file in the Download folder for the first time in over a day, so I deleted it, ran the troubleshooter. That latter process stated, as it ha before, that I needed to restart and then try a download. Windows Update still indicated that I had the KB pending, so I restarted, and no install took place.

The reboot was rather odd at times, but things seemed to settle down, so I went into Windows Update, and saw that I had had four failed install attempts; that number was there at some time yesterday. I also saw that whatever the KB was that had been shown as pending all day yesterday, was gone, and that Windows was searching for updates.

That process ended with a weird message that the search could not be done with the user I was logged on as. I am logged on as my normal user, the only one on this computer, so I tried a second search. That completed with the incomprehensible information that my computer is up-to-date; it is not, a KB4054517 has not been installed.

Reran the troubleshooter, which found and started a download of the KB, but also reported that the database is again corrupted, and was not fixed. I may have made a mistake by having it find update; perhaps a reboot without any pending updates would have allowed the database to be repaired, but this time, unlike previous times, the troubleshooter did not say to reboot and then retry downloading and install. I have now accumulated six failed installation attempts.

I really feel as though I am going in square circles and rectangular triangles.

I am definitely a bit as confused as you are. I found it odd that you cannot troubleshoot Windows Updates or reset Windows Updates with the following two tutorials:

Troubleshoot Problems in Windows 10 with Troubleshooters

Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

Basically, I can see that you have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I would suggest that you start again from scratch. With regard to Disk Cleanup, once opened with elevated privilege, you can checked all items except probably for "Windows Upgrade Log Files" just in case. The one of interest is definitely "Windows Updates Cleanup". It has to be ticked as shown in the following screenshot.

    Cumulative Update KB4054517 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.125-items-check-disk-cleanup-window.png

The file you saw for the first time in the download folder and that you deleted is irrelevant, because like I said before Windows will take care of rebuilding everything in the download folder. So, it cannot be the cause of your trouble. However, I would like to know which build version are you at right now.
Finally, I would suggest that you have a good look at the following tutorial, for it might definitely help:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/247380/how...it-gets-stuck/

Don't give up. There is no problem that cannot be fixed.

On a side note (totally out of context). I saw you were inquiring about "Zorg" in my pseudonym for this forum. I can guarantee you that it has nothing to do with the bad guy (evil) in the Fifth Element movie. It has to do more with:
-activity involved in maintaining something in good working order
-the work of providing treatment for or attending to someone or something
according to Vocabulary.com - Learn Words - English Dictionary

    @ Not Myself

I am still thinking about your case. I mentioned before to delete everything in the download folder from: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, but I am pretty certain something is corrupt in your cache for Windows Update. So It would be good idea to delete the whole content of the Software Distribution folder instead of the Download folder only as shown for everything highlighted in the following screenshot:

    Cumulative Update KB4054517 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.125-delete-everything-software-distribution-folder.png

If it cannot be done in your normal Windows interface, try it in Safe Mode. Also, try to see if your Display Adapter driver is up-to-date in Device Manager. After doing that, rerun the Windows Updates troubleshooter again and finally check for Updates to see if they can download without any hiccup.

Figured I'd check with you guys before uninstalling KB4054517, and possibly others. With the 12/10 updates, I had issues with my start menu and various other basic windows functions. Windows Update troubleshooter seemed to have resolved the worst of them. Now I'm having issues with multiple monitor handling (if I turn off one monitor, the active windows do not shift to the other monitor, etc.), as well as a couple of freezes (unresponsive keyboard - i.e. caps won't toggle, mouse won't move, taskbar animation slide stuck halfway, etc.). I'm not sure if the FTB minecraft lag some users are experiencing are related or not. I just ran Windows Update troubleshooter a couple more times, but I'm getting frustrated. So .... strip the December updates, even though there's a security update, or hope something fixes?

Possibly related to this update set ...

My data backup failed overnight ( finished but with errors). this is a Set and Forget weekly full partition data backup using Aomei Backupper Pro

The backup did not backup three partitions with the error "Partition Missing or has been changed". At the same time it showed the "missing" partitions in the backup set, I've since rebooted (no change) and finally re formed the backup from scratch and it is in progress (it's completed the three partitions that were Missing )

Only reason I post this here is that the update is the only change to the system since the last successful backup so is suspect to me ( changes to the protected folders system maybe, That I do not use as I already have similar protection from Bitdefender)
