Mounting Linux SMB remote to another Linux VM machine (solved)

    Hi there

Loads of info on connecting Windows directories to Linux and Linux to Windows -- but if you've got a SAMBA share on another Linux machine and you want to mount it on say a Linux VM then it's actually quite easy -- don't need any fstab entries etc. You WILL need samba to be up and running on both machines though.

I don't deliberately use fstab here as I don't always want these mounted and I use different servers !!!.

Seems surprisingly difficult to get this type of info though - its usually always linux to windows or windows to Linux !!!.

Have a NAS server (Linux) at address 192.168.1.12 with some media files on it - it has a samba share HDD3 (also shared with y Windows computers)

Have a Linux VM (Brownbear) where I want to access the files from server gylfi and have it mounted in the directory /mnt/DV3 on the VM.

    Simply as root type : mount.cifs //192.168,1,12/HDD3 /mnt/DV3

You'll be prompted for user and password

It should work with server name instead of typing in the IP address - but that's another issue to look at later - the IP address method works while testing / playing around for your VM session.

Added --if the mount point is in the VM samba settings as a share then you can then share that folder / HDD too with further Windows / Linux computers on the network so if the original server isn't available to the final destination this method can "pass it along" to other computers making the HDD reachable. !!

    Cheers
