    Hyper V Manager

    Hello Everyone,

I need assistance in regards to having a VM in Hyper V to work. This includes an XP OS in a VHD and an IDE file.

At the start of creating the VM. Generation 1 is selected > Assign memory 4096 MB w/ Dynamic memory unchecked > No Configure Network > the VHD added.

Here is the tricky part for me since my experience with Hyper v is limited. I'm not sure how to or where to add the IDE file. When I extracted the IDE file. I followed a step-by-step instructions for adding the IDE file on in Settings > IDE Controller 0 under the Media pane. When I do select "browse" the extracted IDE folder does not appear to be an option to select, however under the "new" option does appear. At this point I am stuck

I have been at this for a week and nowhere else to turn for help or guidance on this how to make this work.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks.

Oh yeah forgot to mention I am using a Windows 10 desktop.

It is not clear what you mean by an ide file. Ide is simply the storage interface and you select to add a hard drive (the win xp OS) and/or a cd drive emulator which uses a .iso file. So what is the file extension of the ide file?

Follow the tutorial of Hyper-V and you should be able to install your XP. I am assuming it gives you the option to use a drive you have already with the operating system.

    or

Use a program like Vi-Boot within Marcium Reflect, that will automatically create a Hyper-V like machine to manage.

    then

Going into Hyper-V the machine you made in Vi Boot should be able to load like any other Hyper-V machine.

    .....................

Moving Windows XP from one device you might have to disable or uninstall a device within the original machine or access the HIVE ( Regedit via something like Windows PE or cmd-line via your install disc. ) of XP and manually disable it. XP was designed to communicate with a special device found in most PC around the time it was made, That is what shackles XP to a computer. This needs to be disabled before you move XP. When you load XP it will reshackle itself again. Repeat and Rinse.

You can move any XP install as long as that process/function/driver/etc ( whatever it is called ) is disabled. Otherwise XP will load up and will look for the device and appear to fail.
