VMWare Player may not be "exactly the same thing" as Hyper-V or VirtualBox (except it's easier to create a VM in Player than with Hyper-V and works more reliably than VirtualBox), but functionally it's close enough. What does Player not do that Hyper-V or VirtualBox will?

Headless (both do this, I don't think Player can), auto-suspend on host shutdown (Hyper-v and Workstation Pro can do this, Player and VBox can't). I think you can only run one VM at a time with Player (not sure about that though).

Then again VMWare has Unity if you like that. Only VirtualBox is free on all platforms, VMWare costs on OSX and Hyper-V is only Windows.

I guess there are other differences but that is all I can think of.

I don't agree VMWare is easier. They are all pretty simple and all are equally robust in my experience. I use them all from time to time.

Anyone can disagree, however VMware isn't easier and you can't create VMs with VMware Player, that's why it's free. Doh!

Overall, use what you want, but I don't think VMware is as useful or better than Hyper-V and VirtualBox, because they are (basically) free, whereas VMware Workstation IS not!

Is Unity-type functionality not available with Hyper-V and/or VirtualBox?

VMware Workstation/Windows is NOT free. Please don't suggest or imply it is. VMware Player is available for home users with a free license, but it's not the same exact thing as Hyper-V or VirtualBox. If you're going to show someone up, please do so with full disclosure, anything else is just a waste of everyone's time because... you're wrong!
They no longer show VM Player at the VM ware site only the VM Workstation 12 Player when downloaded as VM Player 12.exe! The two links there are for the free to use at home 32bit and 64bit flavors of the player itself under the new name. Workstation Player is not the same as the paid for Workstation Pro. derekimo had the correct download page there.

You most certainly can create new VMs with VMWare Player. You'd do well to heed your own advice.

Touche, however this was not always the case, and since you didn't admit this, you're just as lame or whatever you intended to show. Again full disclosure. I might be mistaken, but not absolutely and you should have admitted such.

Check the facts before posting. Of course you can create virtual machines in / with VMware Player, or as the free product is today know VMware Workstation Player.

VMware KB: Creating a new virtual machine in VMware Player

    What is VMware Workstation Player?

VMware Workstation Player (formerly known as Player Pro) is a desktop virtualization application that is available for free for personal use.

What can I do with VMware Workstation Player?

Use VMware Workstation Player to create, run, evaluate, and share software running in virtual machines:

    • Create: Use VMware Workstation Player to create virtual machines with the latest 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux operating systems. With Easy Install it’s easier than installing them directly on your PC.
    • Run: VMware Workstation Player can be used by anyone to run virtual machines on a Windows or Linux PC. VMware Workstation Player makes it quick and easy to take advantage of the security, flexibility, and portability of virtual machines.

Your original post said only VMware, and I showed you a free version of VMware. You seem to be intent on arguing with everyone.

Keep it up and we can find a place for you to argue all you want.

    Getting back to the topic

As I mentioned earlier I had just downloaded the 7.1.2 version when finding the previous 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 versions in fact wouldn't even install on 10. When running the set up for this latest player it automatically uninstalled the previous as the successor as you would expect to see with other types of softwares. It simply picked up on the existing VMs and made them available.
