Ubuntu 20.4/Mint on VirtualBox on Windows 10 (V21H2) cant share files

My primary PC is a Windows 10 Pro v21H2
    Im running VirtualBox 6.1.30
    Im running Ubuntu 20.4 / Mint 20.3
    Latest GuestAdditions running in VirtualBox

I had configured a share between Ubuntu and Windows in the VirtualBox. A folder on Windows was accessible by Ubuntu running on VirtualBox. This worked for me for years. I think the latest Windows update broke the share.

I have also begun setting up Mint in VirtualBox hoping that it would be easier to cobble together what I need. Unfortunately I was having issues setting up Nord on Mint (after entering credentials online it would verify me and attempt to dump me out to a UI but as there is no UI the connection never established) ugh! so frustrating.

So I imagine my best bet is to work on my Ubuntu installation as it did work for me at one time.
It was a simple enough process in setting up a folder share in VirtualBox. That is what worked before, just dont know why it stopped, and it was so long ago that I set it up that I lost the skills and knowledge.

Any help would be appreciated. Im getting long in the tooth and this gets more difficult for my feeble mind with every passing year.

    Thanks in advance, D

    Hello,

Do DRAG N' DROP and SHARED CLIPBOARD work when set to 'Bidirectional'?

Bidirectional shared clipboard yes, Drag and drop no.

Also, the 'user interface' that is somewhat tweakable in VirtualBox settings doesnt even appear on the desktop screen once Ubuntu finishes booting in the VB, no matter what setting I choose. So, some settings work in VB and some dont.

In my experience this can only be due to Windows Updates, Virtual Box updates or Guest additions updates.

Im pretty sure the latest Windows update changed the workability.
Also, in my experience Guest Additions works hit and miss at best depending on the OS.
When I bail out of one OS and try another I find that different things do and dont work.
I wonder if there is an OS that works flawlessly with Guest Additions.

Also, haha... not sure that you were trying to be funny but that comment sure was. Its absolutely true that the only time I get in trouble is when something updates. I guess thats called progress.

Wow not many people would’ve spotted the humour in that.

Windows works pretty well with guest additions, ironically.
Please can you post winver? ( + R, ‘winver’, OK)

I might have tripped into a solution.
In Windows security there were settings left unchecked. I wasnt really paying close enough attention, after all ive tried a thousand things to get this to work, so when and why it started I cant say exactly. There were additional settings (check boxes) in Windows that once enabled seemed to do the trick.

    Fingers crossed

Actually yea I think this has got it. Different than how I used to have it cobbled together, but it works and thats all that matters to me. Thanks for your help, I'll post again if this goes sideways.
    Cheers

Yes, this is a totally possible cause. Sorry for not mentioning it!

    Hi folks

Assuming your networking is set to Bridged Mode if using a VM. Then whether using a VM or not :
It's often a SAMBA problem on the Linux side :

    1) on Windows you might have to enable SMB1
    2) On the Linux side in Samba (/etc/samba/smb.conf) ensure in the [Global] settings max protocol is set to NT1. Restart smb(d) and nmb(d) services and re-boot Windows if you enabled SMB1.

Make sure that all systems have the same domain name group e.g WORKGROUP or whatever. Also ensure no duplicate computer names on your LAN.

    cheers
