Restarting a VM for its updates is weird - disconnected but running

Two weeks ago, on my Win 10 PC, I created my first virtual machine ever, using Hyper-V. The VM is Win 11 Pro 64-bit version 21H2.

Just now, in the Win 11 VM, I ran Update. Eventually, it prompted me to restart, and I did. That disconnected me from the VM, and (in Hyper-v Manager) if I try to reconnect, I get error messages.

However, in Hyper-V Manager, I can see that the VM is still "Running", with varying CPU usage.

OK - is this normal? And what should I do?

    Thanks.

I'm the OP. After waiting some minutes, I was able to reconnect to my Win 11 VM, and the VM indicates that the updates were installed.

So I guess this temporary "Disconnected-but-Running" scenario is normal? What is your experience?

I run into that issue often with Hyper-V VM's. I sure wish there was a solution.

Yes, that's normal if you're connected to a Pro VM with Enhanced mode. The restart switched back to standard mode until Windows is up and running and can support an Enhanced mode connection again - that's when you can reconnect.

You won't get disconnected when using a standard connection, and can watch the VM reboot.

It's also helpful if you provide the error message in cases like this.
One error might be different from another one.

    Bree and Hopachi - thanks.

Bree - as I'm a total noob here, if I drop enhanced mode, that means the VM is not connected to my host and can't share files or clipboard copies? Also disconnected from internet?

Hopachi - shall try to copy those error messages next time, but I recall there's no easy way to do that if it's a message inside the Hyper-V Manager. And can't paste anything directly here - must first make a graphic and attach. Unless there's a way to do it more easily?

The VM connects to the internet through its network adapter and network switch, this has nothing to do with using an enhanced session or not. The Default switch will give internet access and lets you see and use any shares on the host machine only. A Virtual switch gives internet access and lets you see shares on any other PC on your network.

An Enhanced session can give you direct access to the all the drives on the host machine and allows cut and paste between Host and VM.

    Bree - thanks for clarity.

I like enhanced. But I wish MS would make the restart process look normal.

Some error popup windows (make them active - focused first) can be copied with Ctrl+C - Ctrl+V but not applicable to the HyperV Manager itself I guess.

You can still take small screenshots / snippet containing the error via the Snipping Tool, no need for whole print-screens.
Then I believe pasting in the message text editor will insert the image automatically, as I tried already in Edge / Chrome and worked. This should also be the case for Firefox unless, just speculating, some of your security restrictions or plugins don't allow image copy-paste.
