[Annoyance] *Actions* panel size on Hyper-V

    Hi!

With so many persons facing real trouble, I am here to ask help for an annoyance: the Actions panel on Hyper-V Manager does not stick to its layout and every time I open the application the panel comes back so large it "consumes" most of the window. The snapshot below makes it clear:

[Annoyance] *Actions* panel size on Hyper-V-screenshot-2021-08-31-184518.png

I have already exhausted my bag of tricks to try to make it stick to my configuration - which allows me to see all the information
presented. Perhaps someone knows how to fix this.

I am running Windows 10 Pro 21H1 with Aug-21 Cumulative Updates installed.

    Thanks for your help.

You have another, and quite possibly related problem visible in your screenshot: the numbers '5' and '4' at the far right. Those are just wrong - they should be showing as arrows and are there to collapse or expand menus when you click on them.

Have you been tweaking your system, changing system fonts perhaps? If so then that could be causing the error in calculating the width for the Actions pane.

The Hyper-V Management console is just one of many .msc management console file used to configure the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe). Others include the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc). I suspect they too will show similar problems and that you have wider problems that just Hyper-V Management. Or you could just run mmc.exe. That on its own, even without a configuration file will almost certainly show the same numbers instead of arrows.

If you have tweaked fonts, then undo all the tweaks. If you haven't, then run DISM's RestoreHealth option, followed by SFC /ScanNow to repair your Windows.

Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image
Run SFC Command in Windows 10

If that fails to improve things, then consider an in-place repair upgrade, which will reinstall Windows while keeping all your files and installed apps.

    Hi @Bree!

    Thanks for your reply.

You are totally right: there is something wrong with my MMC. But I think that it is a broader problem - and I am likely the one to put the blame on!

I believe I have done some sort of customisation somewhere and it is reflecting on MMC. But I have not done anything related to fonts - I am sure about that.

I have tested the MMC.exe in another machine with the same Windows version and under a different username. The "4" / "5" issue is present there as well. And to make matter worse, I have just installed a fresh new Windows in a VM. Guess what: it is happening there as well. Of course, I have performed my customisation on that VM. So the problem is on me !

I believe I will have to live with this annoying issue for a long time!

thought that might be the case.

What you could do is another clean install in a VM, then apply your customisations one at a time until you find the one that breaks the MMC. Then you'll know which one to undo on all you other machines.

If I have some spare time during this weekend I will reinstall Windows in a VM as you have suggested, one customisation each time. Perhaps I will be able to pinpoint what I am doing "wrong".

    Stay tuned!

And thanks for your advice once more. If it were not you, I will not even think about those "4" and "5".

Can you place your cursor as shown below, then select and drag the boundary left or right?

Yes. I have to move that "column" to the right every time I open Hyper-V Manager. But it does not stick there after I close it.

I have been experiencing this exact same issue for a long time. I just reinstalled Windows yesterday and very few configuration changes have been made so I'm thinking that it's not anything that has been installed. I installed Hyper-V and the only VM that has been imported is GNS3. I opened mmc.exe and noticed the same large oversized Actions pane. However, the left-side pane is oversized as well. This is what the default MMC console looks like for me:

I noticed that it is expanded to somewhat fit the size of my screen but doesn't take up the full screen. The screen I'm using is a Samsung C49RG9x, it's an ultrawide monitor. Are you by any chance using a wide screen monitor? I'm just wondering if it is detecting the size of the monitor and trying to fit to it automatically. Then when the window is resized, it isn't saving the size of the Actions pane. I don't have a fix at this time but this might be a source to investigate. I have been searching online for a fix for awhile and this is the first time I've seen anyone else mention this issue.

Same issue here - Actions pane takes the lions share of the window on launch (on multiple Windows 10 PCs).

I can't say for sure if Sandro's issue was self-inflicted, especially since he/she is encountering other issues as well. But I can say that based on my experiences and the comments in this thread, this is not some isolated incident.

What I found interesting is that at some level, the Hyper-V MMC *does* remember the width you set the Actions pane to. Test it yourself as follows:
    1. Open Hyper-V and set the size of the Actions pane as desired.
    2. Go to View->Customize and Un-check the Actions pane to hide it, then click OK
    3. Close and Re-open Hyper-V
    4. Go to View->Customize and Re-check the Actions pane to show it, then click OK

You will notice that it is still at the size you set. So it CAN remember the width between sessions! It only "forgets" the assigned width if it is showing the pane on launch. Clearly this is an initialization issue within the MMC itself. (I would LOVE to say I am surprised, but alas, it is Microsoft after all).

If anyone has come up with a solution of how to fix or work-around this "feature", I would love to hear about it. About the best solution I've come up with is to not close the freaking Hyper-V window.
