Hey, I realize this is a very old thread. But the issue keeps popping up all over the internet and this thread has some of the most useful information about it.

In my case, I tried the long lists of suggestions made for the "Could not connect to the virtual machine" issue on other sites.

But this thread had the clue - something to do with security and Windows authentication.

In my case, the computer is sort of a headless server so I had set it up to automatically log in and start various services/software/server. It's not the sort of thing that can just sit there waiting for someone to type a password in when, for example, we lose power and it auto-restarts. It just needs to start itself and run.

Whatever steps I took to make that happen seem to have made the connection to the virtual machine fail with the "Video remoting was disconnected message".

In this case, I have been able to connect to the VMs by logging in to a different account on the machine that has not had its security disturbed in this way.

(At least, that is my working theory. Maybe there is some other issue related to security or permissions that is making this account malfunction, while a different account on the same computer seems to work fine.)

Deleting following value fixed issue for me:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ForceAutoLogon
