W2K22 Server Big BOO BOO from Ms (whether VM or real version)

    Hi there
What's up with Ms QC these days -- can't they even get the simplest of things correct.

Anybody in the Windows insider program can download the W2K22 Server preview versions -- good for people who want to test / learn Windows server who for all sorts of reasons can't afford to buy it or don't work for an organisation in the I.T dept that handles the servers.

BUT Please Ms -- Big defects here :

    1) The wretched thing won't activate so you can't apply any personalised changes to it,,

    2) Another mega negative is you can't change the WORKGROUP name - which is a bit of a bugbear if your LAN has a different name to WORKGROUP. Why on earth they did that -- who knows - the name WORKGROUP has always been changeable before in any version of Windows including W2K19 Server.

    3) They've finally got languages and all sorts of optional features (on a 2nd iso) but without activation -- it's pretty useless.

C'mon Ms - what's happened to your QC these days - why throw this open for public testing if people can't test it properly.

There's 2 standard product keys that are available on the web but if you use those it then requests that the product can only be activated by using your work place's activation mechanism -- which if you are a home user pretty much kills that option.

Loads of people want to study servers etc -- remember todays students might be the next big buyers of Ms stuff -- but if they cant test and evaluate -- no prizes for guessing the answer.

    Cheers

Is it any wonder some folks and businesses are using a version of a Linux Server OS? Too bad we don't know if any Microsoft employees see the issues being posted and whether the information is passed on to their bosses.

    Hi there

I don't think people mind too much if preview builds have errors / weird defects -- but surely the things I pointed out are just plain BASIC !!!!!! what on earth is the point of trying to test a server and then the only thing you can do with it is just boot the wretched thing !!!! - no personalisation, no file sending, can't add to your LAN etc !!!

I really can't fathom for the life why Ms didn't have temporary activation on this -- whose going to pirate a limited expiry version of a brand new Windows server if they are dependent on servers for running their businesses - or even why would anybody pirate it at all - it's limited life so only designed for testing in any case - certainly not at all for any sort of production use.

The WORKGROUP name thing is also a stupid irritant as well -- who wants to rename every computer in their network just to accomodate a piece of test software. !!!

If I had this sort of stuff on a any LINUX server or NAS box the offending OS would have gone straight into the bin.

    Cheers

Here's hoping that no server engineers are trying to learn in the ins and the out of an operating system on a preview release. I do agree with you Jimbo that it sure seems like MS took this one out of the oven way too early. If somebody is interested in getting into IT, stick with the released trial versions of 2016 and 2019. Many businesses are just getting around to rolling out 2019 at the present time. It's not like you would be learning the old way of doing things if you started there.

    Hi there

With Virtual Machines efficient and not consuming many resources there's no reason why Ms shouldn't release "Development" versions - or even "Pre-Alpha" stuff - as there's plenty of ways to test this first before rolling out to wider public.

I've never worked in a Backroom IT dept where people manage servers and networks but to just a "Dumb User" like me who quite likes playing around with this stuff a Server that Can't actually Serve anything seems to me a pretty basic error however you look at it !!!!

I've read about things like kubernates etc so even if VM's aren't the thing there's loads of other ways to test these things - and I don't suppose a company like Ms would be short of a few dollars to acquire sensible hardware and testing laboratories. !

The way they seem to be rolling out stuff without adquate QC seems it's like developing a new car and then finding out that you can only fill it with "KWIK-GAS" between 05.00 and 05.10 on a Monday morning !!!!.

I've seen places where some development staff work on various SAP (Huge ERP type of systems) projects and the sheer hassle they have to do before any updates / fixes gets rolled out on to production servers (apart from any serious fatal defect that needs emergency fixes) is really quite horrendous and quite a rigid audit trail too - but continuity of service to the users and customers makes that all worth while (at least for the end users !!!!).

yeah, it does seem like they would get the basics functional. I never play around with any of these releases, so historically I don't have any idea how they function. I never play with them until they hit RC status.
