I don't recommend browsing the internet on that old-timer.
There are sites and protocols the old browser just doesn't understand.

I believe drag n drop doesn't work in VMWare for the Win9x tools. Or does it? I don't use it so I don't know.

File sharing is a challenge. This kind of VMs are quite isolated due to lack of support.
There is theoretical knowledge of setting up SMB/Windows File Sharing but I never tried it. You'll also need to get networking up and running.

Here I have no networking so I simply attach an extra empty virtual disk to the VM, one that you can access on the host while the VM is powered off. Or for quick transfers, just use an ISO file. You can create iso's from any folder with Folder2Iso.

I think W98 is technically "Abandonware" these days so there's a generic key available so just google.

otherwise search this archive for old isos etc

Software Library : Free Software : Free Download, Borrow and Streaming : Internet Archive

For USB on early Windows releases you'll probably have to set USB support at 1.0 or 1.1 in the VM's config file - on VMWare there's a dropdown to select the level of USB support. Now whether todays large HDD's will work on USB 1 is another issue though.

There's some really Bonkers people out there trying to run Win 98 SE Native on modern hardware -- you could probably follow this guide but on a VM.

How to install Windows 98SE on a modern PC \

Note vhd / vhdx don't have to be supported natively by Windows etc -- when you share a virtual disk from a VM to another machine (real or VM) that machine sees the virtual HDD as a "physical Disk" -- i.e NTFS / FAT32 / Linux file formats etc.

That's how for example you can create a Win98 Virtual machine residing on an SSD -- those weren't even in the realms of Science Fiction when Win 98 came out.

    Cheers

Uh. oh. Another problem. Win98SE requires drivers of the USB drive. I don't have an USB 1.0 or 1.1 Disk. So I used Win2K and it worked well.
