Windows 10 Home does not include the Hyper-V Management Tools, or the Hyper-V Platform that provides the services you can use to create and manage virtual machines. The Virtual Disk Service (VDS) is nothing to do with Hyper-V or virtualisation, despite its name. It provides disk management services for all types of disks and is required by Disk Management.

In Services you will see that it's start up type is Manual and that normally it is not running.



When Disk Management says 'Connecting to virtual disk service...' it mean that it is starting up the service. If you look in Services now you'll see the VDS is running, and when you close Disk Management you'll see the service has been stopped.
