Windows 10 Hyper V
Has anyone else noticed that windows 10 runs like an absoulte dog when running as a hyper V "GUEST" as compaired to windows 2012r2 Server?

Actually, it's been running great for me as a guest. I even run a Plex server on a VM where multiple video transcode streams occur simultaneously and it still runs fine. Of course, there are a lot of factors involved - how much memory you are assigning the guest, whether you are allowing memory to be swapped or dedicating memory to the VM, the hardware that you are running on, etc.

Windows servers -- even from me who uses Linux a lot are very efficient (once you can kill a lot of the security and install sources restriction in them ) -for Desktop use - not advocating these modifications for Corporate servers etc).
Windows Servers have a lot less bloat in them and are available to be "optimised" much better than a single user like bog standard Windows.
Just follow through some of my posts about using "Servers as Desktop Workstations".
My main "Windows system" (for me at home - not quite yet for work) is in fact a W2K19 Windows server configured to run as a Workstation -- it beats the pants off almost any edition of W10 -- a bit like comparing a top 100 m runner in an Olympic games final with a Carthorse.
Even running as a VM when it's quiesced - i.e not actually doing any active apps the CPU usage is minimal.
The only drawback (IMO not a serious one) is that Store apps aren't available -- who cares since you can install stuff from alternate sources - even themes if you want - just download the theme(s) and double click and it works as you can see from my server screenshots.
Possible drawbacks - some software knows you are running on a server -- so it won't install - e.g Macrium --just use the stand alone bootable media if running as a VM and set boot device to the iso image.
Office 2019 works OK on my system but I've got the VL version so you could have potential problems there.
Can't ever see myself running "Bog standard" W10 again now I've got W2K19 server working like greased lightning on a desktop - OK you might have to re-install every 5 months as new evaluation / preview copy comes out - but IMO a price worth paying.

A lot depends on the spec of the Host machine. Perhaps first and foremost is that the virtual drives for the Guest should be located on an SSD, anything will run like a dog if they're on a 'spinner'.
For the last two major Feature Updates (1903 and 2004) I've tested upgrading to the Release Preview of the forthcoming upgrade and used it for about a month before the public release. To do this I restored a Macrium image of my System One (specs in 'My Computers' below) to a Hyper-V VM, then performed an in-place upgrade with an ISO obtained from UUPDump.
The specs of the Host machine are: Intel Core i7-4600U, 8GB RAM, Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD.
I used this VM as my main machine for about a month to see if any problems were caused by the update. If anything, it ran faster in the VM than it did on the physical hardware of the original machine (admittedly, not too hard a feat given that the original machine still has an HDD).Last edited by Bree; 22 Feb 2021 at 05:46. There's nothing intrinsic as to why VM's on HYPER-V should run poorly -- assume you've got enough RAM and are not using RDP over a LAN to access the VM.
If you are using RDP then all bets are off - especially transmitting full screen on large monitor -- the stupid RDP software sends the whole screen so if watching video over RDP the experience is likely to be disappointing unless you have a stellar speed network connection. You also need to see if on a lan whether the connection is going through a "Virtual" network "card". Also set your adapter to full duplex to maximize throughput.
The best performance on HYPER-V will be to pass thru as much hardware as possible - but that's a whole deal in itself.
If you can avoid RDP do so - even VNC is better.
