    Win 7 virtual machine with XP Mode on Win 10 or an XP virtual machine

    I'm up to 3 attempts at installing an XP machine on Hyper V (Windows 10 Pro), and though I can get the machine to run, I cannot find the browser I installed. Using the Hyper V tutorial, I followed carefully the points of unblocking both WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe and Opera's browser version 15.0.1147.130. I mounted VirtualXPVHD.vhd and installed the Opera set up file in Documents & Settings\All Users, but running the VM, the browser is not found in stated folder. Any thoughts?

    Kari in his tutorial on Hyper V install with XP states that Opera's browser version 15.0.1147.130 will work, but installing it offline, I'm not seeing it when I load the XP VM.

    Hi folks

    @Tipiford

    I'd use VMWare player (Free) or VMWare workstation if you want to run XP VM's these days. Don't forget to install the VMWare tools package on the GUEST after first boot to get proper graphics and Sound. Set the USB controller to USB3.1 in the dropdown - the default is USB2 or even 1.1 which will certainly prevent some USB devices from working. So long as your XP machine is at SP3 level then the 3.1 USB dropdown will ensure your USB devices will work perfectly.

    You can also run on VBOX but I've always found Oracle's Virtual box too fiddly -- If you do use that program install Virtual box (or is it called these days Guest) additions -- serves same purpose as VMWare's VMWare tools.

    Advantage of these programs is they will also run on Windows HOME if using Windows as the Host machine.

    Here's an XP VM on VMWare running on a Linux Host -- Firefox running OK as a browser -- running also a program to copy an Audio CD (or ISO image) to MD (MiniDisc Recorder).

    Note add this Line to the VMWare config file for that VM (the.VMX file) (on Linux Hosts only and NOT for W10 VM's) to enable 3D support and graphic hardware acceleration (in addition to setting the checkbox enable 3d and hardware acceleration when creating the VM in the first place :

    mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE"

    (Also if you want the XP machine to be able to share drives on a Linux type NAS server you need to add these lines in the [global] section of the Samba config file (usually in directory /etc/samba/smb.conf

    Some will shudder with horror as this could be a security exposure - however on a Home LAN that's grossly over stated -- you aren't running an Enterprise Mission critical Network !!!!! - The fact you are using XP at all shows you understand risks in using these older OS'es - nothing wrong for running perfectly good legacy hardware if you know what you are doing !!

    [global]
    min protocol = NT1 <=================== this needs to be set is equiv to Windows 10 enabling SMB1
    lanman auth=yes
    ntlm auth=yes

    Now you'll see access to the shared SAMBA drives on the NAS

    Hi there
    @Tipiford

    Great stuff !!

    Once you've installed the VM get the "Black Luna Theme" for XP -- I'd love to have that on Windows 10 !!!!

    I'm also still using XP for cutting Vinyl records for people -- the hardware I have would cost quite a bit of money to replace - and it's still working properly -- nice little business I have in Bespoke Vinyls (7 /10 / 12 inch) for people !!! cutting their music tracks to Vinyl with customised centre labels!!. especially in these Covid times. Can even do the odd 78 RPM disc too -- funny to hear Beyonce on a "Wind up gramaphone" - but who am I to decide what a customer wants !!!!

    Getting Vinyl Blanks used to be difficult - quite easy now.

    Also I digitize old 35 mm negatives and kodachrome slides with an old (but still working 100% (Agfa 35 MM negative scanner) and also use an HP blue print plotter.

    Plenty of reasons I still have to keep the old XP system alive -- I send any e-commerce stuff to W10 (also as a VM) or to the Host NAS - I don't do anything on the Internet on the XP system -- I showed Firefox just to "show it could be done".

    My main use for W10 as a VM is Office 2019 -- EXCEL, OUTLOOK, PROJECT etc are still far and away better than most of the other Office clones out there and things like Photoshop, and Stock trading platforms so I'm a great user of Virtual machines - not "just for fun" but for making money and e-commerce etc etc.

    No prob on one of my NAS machines running XP and W10 concurrently as VM's. Laptop access is fine also with RDC / VNC - but for you there should be no probs running an XP VM on your W10 Host machine

    Any probs just post and I'm sure you'll be up and running.

    This is a great Forum -- I've had oodles of help during the time I've been a member too.

    Stay Safe and is N.C still called "The Tar Heel State" ?? - and Have Happy Xmas.

    Yep, we're still the Tar Heel State, and it sounds as though you're doing much more with XP, and making $$$ with it─good for you, I'm a vigorous proponent of capitalism.
    This VMWare is the cat's meow, waay simpler and smoother than Hyper V, and I thank you for putting me onto it, gracias and Merry Christmas to you, too.

    Thanx for the invitation, I've been there, and enjoyed my visit immensely, but too old─and retired─to be digging new roots.

    As to the VMWare install, it was so simple, but now that it's installed I can get on the internet, but cannot get to certain sites. Any ideas there? (I have tried all the setting on the "Page cannot be displayed" page that pops up.)

    Hi there

    @Tipiford
    Try setting Networking in the VM machine editor to "Bridged"

    Win 7 virtual machine with XP Mode on Win 10 or an XP virtual machine-screenshot_20201209_223419.png

    Also on the GUEST try ensuring that you set "allow remote communications" , set Windows networking to SMB1 etc.
    Turn off firewalls also while testing -- you can always add security later.

    On the HOST you probably need to enable SMB1 as well.

    You're never too old to try new things (especially as these days some of the youngsters seem to making a real pigs ear of running things -- more concerned with "Unisex toilets and transgender issues" than in getting businesses restarting again after what has been for most a really diabolical year).

    Cheers
