Have you tried the Audio workaround(s) explained on the VMWare forums? The links are in one of my earlier posts in this thread. At least on my machine these workarounds fixed all the sound issues.

Just tried VMW 15.5.5 and it worked find. Installed a Linux iso and just cannot get sound working. VMW detects my audio card, but Linux does not want to talk to VM.

    Any idea why?

Funny, I have used Hyper-V so much I know settings inside out but I had forgotten all the VMW quirks as it is years since I used it.
    Hi there
sometimes in the Linux system itself you also need to adjust the audio settings as well -- usually in the mixer control with hardware / sound settings / profiles

e.g (depending on what Linux distro you are using and what mixer installed) --in my case :

if you find several profiles choose one that works.

(The sound system must work of course on the Host in the first place BTW).

I have had to rollback to before VMW was installed as it affected my WiFi - takes over 20 seconds to start. Rolled back and back to normal.

    Hi there

I use KVM/QEMU these days and run Windows VM's on that Host as I don't need Windows that much currently and I find I can run Windows VM's almost as good as Native with the Linux box I'm hosting these on. Hardware passthru means that most of the VM's can use Native hardware and drivers which speeds up the whole thing without the overhead of a Host OS such as is required by the VMWare GUI application.

My main use for Windows is Office (EXCEL still far better than any of the "free office clones out there, Outlook -- still the easiest if you have a load of email accounts and servers to connect to, and Powerpoint / EXCEL / Word integration) , Photoshop, SAP GUI (accessing ERP SAP systems for various clients), Hardware capture of video from SKY Q and from amazon firesticks via NETFLIX / AMAZON PRIME and work type logon to VPN's - otherwise Linux systems offer all I need at far less hassle now I've mastered the KVM/QEMU HYPERVISOR systems.

    Cheers

@Compumind - VMware did not provide an ETA, they simply confirmed that they were aware of the issue and that they are working on it. I may go back to my thread on their support forums and inquire whether they have any sort of ETA.
    Thanks.

I would love to be able to run the new WSL2 (which uses the Virtual Machine Platform/HyperV) and Virtualbox together. While VM's do in fact run under VirtualBox with Hyper-V installed, you get the green turtle icon in virtualbox and the VM's run terrible. For this reason, I am just skipping WSL2 and running my Linux nodes under Virtualbox.

While I've used VMWare Workstation in the past, I don't want to pay the licensing fee, so I use Virtualbox instead.

    Hi folks

latest update - VMWare Wks 15.5.5 does in fact work with HYPER-V but the VM's run as slow as molasses (as does the Host) so job not properly done.

Both HYPER-V and VMWare when running some Linux VM's it's impossible to get if you are using a GUI on Linux vm's 1920 X 1080 (standard full HD video) resolution -- loads of other resolutions available.

This seems bonkers as full HD (1080 X 1920) must be the most popular and used resolution around these days.

It's a shame that a paid product like VMware goes through so little testing by VMware. It's not an inexpensive product either. I believe it's $249 or $149 in the US to upgrade between major versions. For that kind of money you would expect at least some sort of quality control, but sadly, there have been several updates that they have inflicted upon us that were laughable at the very best.

    Hi there
Lack of fix to 1920 X 1080 resolution on some VM's is a deal breaker for me -- I am still at a total loss to understand what probably the most popular video setting is the one that doesn't work (at least on my systems) for trying Linux VM's on VMWare etc -- a zillion and one other modes are offered which is fine for big screens etc - but loads of typical laptops etc use 1920 X 1080 as standard.

Jimbo, I agree, that would be a deal breaker for me as well. In my case, I work exclusively with Windows VMs and there are no screen resolution limitations there. I can freely size a Windows VM to absolutely anything that I want.
