VMware Workstation and Hyper-V on same machine

I know it's been out in beta a while, but the new Version of VMware workstation (15.5.5) is now out which can be installed on a system with Hyper-V active. This is great if you need to do testing with both Hypervisors. Just tried it and it works like a charm.

Note that this requires Windows 10 2004.

Good I thought I was going to have to wait till VMware workstation 16 for them to enable this, I will probably wait for a month or so before I start the update to Win 2004

Version 15.5.5 introduces a sound bug. There is a fix which includes adding a line to the .vmx file of the corresponding virtual machine. More info can be found in on the VMware forums: Sound breaking really bad after update but vide... |VMware Communities

Do you mean VMware 15.5 and Hyper-V won't work together until 2004 is pushed?
I'm using VMware 15.5 with 1909 and no Hyper-V and don't see any issues.

According to my knowledge VMWare Workstation prior to 15.5.5 and Hyper-V never worked together, no matter what version of Windows 10 was used.

    Hi there
I think you still need the Free trial VMWare WKS 16 -- If anybody has got HYPER-V and VMWare 15.5.X working concurrently please post screen shots

I mean with VM's actually running concurrently on the same host -- not the fact that you can INSTALL VMWare on a machine running HYPER-V but actually run concurrent VM's on it.

With QEMU/KVM and VMWare it's possible to run VMWare VM's and QEMU/KVM VM's concurrently on a Linux HYPERVISOR : example shown here 2 Windows 10 VM's running concurrently on Arch Linux Host with KDE plasma desktop GUI --one QEMU/KVM (Linux HYPERVISOR like Windows HYPER-V) and the other VMware WKS rel 15.5 --both VM's Windows 10.

I'll wait until 2004 is pushed and see for myself.

Okay, so here is the details, as well as some bad news....

VMware and Hyper-V could never coexist together until now. The requirements are that you have both VMware 15.5.5 and Windows 10 2004 (the final released build and later - which is of course now officially publicly available). VMware release notes for 15.5.5 are very clear on this. Also requires Sandy Bridge or newer CPU.

Now the bad news: There are a LOT of people complaining about keyboard problems. Most complaints I have seen were about Caps lock not working. In my case, I ran into a different keyboard issue. When I first installed 15.5.5 even worked great. I had both Hyper-V and VMware coexisting and all looked good - that is until I tried to install a new VM. When you boot from the Windows image and you get the prompt from Windows setup to press any key to boot from the DVD there is absolutely no response to pressing any key on the keyboard. Tried uninstalling VMware and reinstalling from scratch and whole mess of other troubleshooting but simply could not get it to work. Had to revert back to 15.5.2 and disable Hyper-V.

BTW, this problem was reproducible. I tried it on 2 different machines; a desktop and a laptop, but I had the same exact difficulty on both systems.

Note that on both of these systems I upgraded from Win 10 1909 to 2004 rather than a clean install. I really don't suspect any different behavior from a clean install, but I may try it if I get to feeling adventurous.

I find it hard to believe that VMware would miss such a major issue in testing so I can't help but think that something in my environment must be different that what they themselves and the BETA testers were running.

It's not your environment, it's 15.5.5. There is a Caps Lock issue, a Num Lock issue and a sound issue. As nice as the new coexistence of Workstation and Hypver-V is, they surely f..... up quality control for this release. My theory is: They were so euphoric about the new possibility to run Workstation on Windows 10 while Hyper-V is active that they simply forgot to test anything else

Here's an update just in case anyone following this topic is interested:

VMware is aware of the problem and they have provided a workaround to me for now.

Simply add the following line to %PROGRAMDATA%\VMWare\VMware Workstation\config.ini:

    mks.win32.useInjectedMagic=FALSE

    It's working for me.
