    Hi folks

e.g with KVM/QEMU for VM's -- I have the video choice resolution of pretty well anything available the monitor in conjunction with the graphics card is capable of delivering.

In this case for the VM I have passed thru hardware video card to a separate a monitor with maximum 1920 X 1080 -- working perfectly. (So one Video card and Monitor for Host another for the VM I'm testing).

Windows VM's in full screen also use whole screen properly too. I think also lack of hardware passthru on VMWare rather reduces its usefulness -- HYPER-V is better here but I just can't get anything like the performance using Windows Host and HYPER-V that I can with KVM/QEMU - and the keyboard / mouse always seem "syrupy or laggy" on HYPER-V.

With a Windows VM all possible modes are shown -- so theoretically even better

    Why does vmware on non windows VM's miss 1920 X 1080 !!!

    I think same is true with HYPER-V for Non Windows VM's (i.e no 1920 X 1080).

    Cheers

FYI, VMware 15.5.6 is now out. I have not tested it yet, but hope to do so this evening.

It's a shame that a paid product like VMware goes through so little testing by VMware. It's not an inexpensive product either. I believe it's $249 or $149 in the US to upgrade between major versions.
And that is the reason that I don't use it. I used to have a copy on my work laptop that my previous company purchased, but not any longer. VirtualBox handles what I need. AWS fills in the rest.

But the Virtualbox attempt at coexisting with HyperV does not work properly, if at all.

    Hi folks
all these systems are OK for testing - but in real use do you need these VM systems to co-exist with each other on the same machine - especially with "Nested" VM's available on decent hardware each VM can be a separate one -- response shouldn't be too horrible either with decent CPU, RAM, SSD's and graphics systems

A windows system Host with a VM Windows HYPER-V system running a lower level VM works OK -- of course passing hardware through to "nested VM's" becomes a pain of course.

that said - if a company offering a relatively expensive product (VMWare WKS) which doesn't work then that's where people should look for alternatives.

I've found mine - works efficiently, easily customisable and runs either Windows or Linux VM's without any issues at all so there's no going back for me now.

BTW latest version of VMWare WKS (and the trial rel 16) fails to have 1920 X 1080 resolution for non Windows VM's --not an issue I suppose for those who want headless non Windows (i.e all cli driven) linux server VM's but for desktop VM's a decent full screen GUI at the most popular resolution (1080p or 1080 X 1920) should I'd have though be always available !!!

Oh yes, I know. I said earlier in this thread, I am waiting (not-patiently) for HyperV and Virtualbox to work well together. I really want to use the new WSL2, but since it requires Hyper-V components, it doesn't work for me as I use Virtualbox for everything else.

When virtualbox and hyperV are together, the VM's in virtualbox get a green turtle icon at the bottom of the virtualbox window and the VM's without virtualbox are so slow they are completely unusable.

Just thought that I would update after a little lite testing - so far 15.5.6 seems to resolve the issues I had.

Fingers crossed as I test further.

On my system 15.5.6 has indeed fixed the issues. In my case these were the Caps Lock and Num Lock issues as well as the sound issues.
