Hyper-V Virtual Machine does not have internet access

    Hi all,

I recently created a VM for some basic testing purposes and wanted it to use my laptop's internet access.

To that end I configured the VM with a "Default" Hyper-V network switch but it is still unable to access the Internet.

I read a bunch of posts but didn't find or recognize anything that solved it for me.

I did restart Internet Connection Sharing service, which didn't do anything.

Happy to provide any screenshots/logs/additional info.

I checked for updates (just using the Windows update applet) and the current setup is below:
    Windows Version: 10.0.18363.778
    Hyper-V Manager Version: 10.0.18362.1

    Thank you very much!

These are the notes I made when I did this . . .

Setup/Configure the Network/Internet [connect to the Internet]

    Open the Hyper-V Manager.
In the right-hand pane select Virtual Switch Manager.
    Click Create Virtual Switch.
Enter the Name: Network Adapter [for example].
Check External Network: and select the Intel[R] Ethernet Connection [for example].
Check Allow Management OS to share this network adapter.
    Click Apply.
    Click Yes.
    Click OK.
Highlight the Virtual Machine in the middle pane.
Click settings in the right-hand pane.
Select Network Adapter [which you setup previously] in the middle pane.
In the Virtual Swith: drop down menu select Network Adapter.
    Click Apply.
    Click OK.

    I hope this helps!

The Default Switch should give you internet access, but not access to other machines on your network. What OS are you running in the Hyper-V VM? If it is XP then it cannot work with the standard Hyper-V Network Adapter, only the Legacy Network Adapter. I have found a few cases where even a W10 VM would only work with the Legacy adapter.

Try removing the current network adapter from the VM then add the Legacy Network Adapter with the Default Switch. That should work under all circumstances.

Windows Vista guests also require Legacy NIC. In addition, I have had really confusing experiences with Android virtual machines: whatever I do, regardless how often I setup a new Android VM, I never get them connected to Internet if I am not using both NICs, (Legacy and the normal one).

First, the good news for me: the VM picked up internet access. No idea why as I'd made no further changes after posting and stopped looking at it. Restarted a couple of times for different reasons, looked a day later and it was on. I swear posting here did the trick hehe

Hi Paul! Good suggestion, which reminded me that I'd tried it earlier and it didn't do a thing, unfortunately. But thank you.

    Okay

It's Windows 10 1903, or the November '19 update. Thank you for suggesting a legacy adapter. I'd never had to use it on a VM before and hope I don't have to.

Issue solved, at least for now. Take care
