Virtual Desktop Option with Separate Shortcuts

I tried out the Task View that is built into Windows 10 to see if it would help me with separating my desktop view for the different tasks that I use my desktop for. Unfortunately it appears that it keeps the same Desktop but just organizes running applications.

Outside of going to a full VM like VirtualBox, what alternatives are there for me?

To clarify, I use my desktop for different functions such as Game Development, Gaming, & Software Development. Each of these has a collection of Applications, Tools, Folders, and Files that are unique to their function. Right now I have folders on my Desktop to separate them. I would prefer to have the actual desktop view only contain things that are for the particular task and not everything cluttered onto a single desktop with the same background.

How about setting up different users for each type of task, i.e. Users named "GameDev, Playing, SWdev. or similar. You could set up applications to be specific to that user. C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

a "Sort" of cludgy way of doing it is to use the Windows taskview button -- but this doesn't give you what you really want as you've found out - genuine "virtual" desktops".

There's some older software going around such as DEXPOT (Google for it) - but whether this will work on W10 these days is a moot point -- I'm not minded to try I'm afraid.

A load of these programs were written for XP/W7/W8 and don't really look like anybody's worked on them since.

This thing ?? looks fairly recent though -- might just have enough in it for you to have a go --it's free.

IMO though for that type of work that you appear to be doing -- multiple monitors to me seems the obvious way to do it.

Last time I used Dexpot on W10, it worked fine.
