    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.

    Hi everyone.
    I've set up a VM for use with win 8.1 but although I have the official Microsoft .iso setup doesn't run &
    it states no OS found. I'm using Gen 2.
    There's no problem when I use Generation 1 as I can install from disc but I don't have internet or sound & when I add internet it affects the host PC's internet (I lose Ethernet connection).
    Running Win 10 Pro. 1909.
    All drivers & Windows fully upto date.

    Is there a setting I've missed?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there

    @Bastet

    1) I don't think XP will boot from UEFI so make the VM MBR.
    2) For Internet / network connections on HYPER-V you need to create an EXTERNAL Switch (Bridged Networking to have VM access to Host / Internet / LAN).
    3) on the HOST (W10) machine enable SMB1 (programs and features - turn windows features off / on).

    Cheers

    Thanks Jimbo,
    I’m installing Windows 8.1. I’d tried previously with XP but gave up on that.
    When I created an external bridge in a previous attempt (Ethernet) I lost Ethernet on the Host (Windows 10)- stated it was disabled. However I did this after creating the VM so maybe that was why.

    Don't give up !!!

    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.-xp.png

    I wish W10 had the "Luna Black" XP theme --much nicer than the current W10 one's -- that's another issue though

    I'm using QEMU on Linux (that XP VM was run on Windows HOST) but yuur external switch on HYPER-V should look something like this :

    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.-screenshot_20200115_101541.png

    then your VM has it's own proper IP address and can access (or be accessed from) the rest of your LAN. NAT shares IP with Host so limits connectivity. NAT is the standard HYPER V Internal switch.

    I’m going to keep trying. :)
    The Luna themes were lovely, the blue one looked great with my Aquarium theme.

    I created an external Ethernet connection under VM but I lost wifi of the PC, if I create a wifi connection I lose Ethernet.
    I’ll have to think this through.

    Well I installed Win 8.1 using the Microsoft official .iso as the disk I have didn’t want to install this time & have Ethernet connection via Default setting but don’t have audio even though enhanced mode is on. I’ve read about a setting under the VM Remote Desktop which I’ll have a look at.
    Any further suggestions welcome as I’d like to have access to my DVD drive to install a game. I’ve tried moving the .exe off the disc & transferring via OneDrive but it will not install this way.
    Edit: DVD drive is now working.

    Hi there

    @Bastet

    I think in RDP there's some settings where it says transfer sound from Remote computer or whatever.

    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.-screenshot_20200117_091227.png

    Here I'm using RDP on a Virtual Machine to transfer Audio from a different remote Virtual machine =-- works perfectly (KVM/QEMU on Linux seems far easier than getting HYPER-V to work --that's just my preference though).

    RDP isn't the fastest of protocols even on a decent LAN --you could also try vnc for windows (you'll need a VNC server on the remote machine - the VM in your case and a vnc client on the machine you are using to access the remote one (probably the HOST).

    Edit: I needed to turn on RD within the Firewall on the Host PC to fix the error in connecting, but now I am logged out of Win 10 every time I connect & I receive this popup:
    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.-f4ba523a-1eea-48d7-8b13-a5a48d5507ee.jpeg

    —————————————————————————————————————————————-

    I don’t know if I’m doing this wrong but I cannot connect to the Win 10 host:
    Win 8.1 VM can't install OS.-3be63abb-35cb-42eb-b23d-2527de01253b.jpeg

    I have entered the name of the PC correctly afaik.
    RDC is running.

    Hi there
    @Bastet

    check

    SMB1 enabled on W10 Host otherwise earlier Windows won't be able to access.
    Ensure also that Remote connections are enabled on the Host -- easy way check in control panel --it's still there BTW).
    Enable Network discovery on the Host as well.

    Now you can also use an IP address to reach the target computer --check ping first.
    If computer you are trying to reach doesn't have an IP address that you can reach on your LAN ensure Bridged Networking / External switch or whatever depending on what you use for the Virtualisation software is enabled.

    Cheers
