Great idea Kari. I like having one place now to look at and ask questions for Hyper-V.

I took the defaults when I setup my VMs and that was not a good idea. When I setup vRAM it said 1GB Dynamic so I thought that meant it would use whatever RAM it needed. Apparently that is not the case or it doesn't do a very good job of it.

I redid the VM last night with the specs I mentioned: RAM to 4GB, 2 cores, SCSI controller and 50GB. So far it runs much better.

A Hyper-V tuning tutorial will be good.

Once you've setup a VM, are you supposed to be able to add additional cores? I tried it and everything came to a standstill. Took forever to boot and was unusable. Likewise, can I boost ram without causing grief?

Answered my own question, just went ahead and tried it and it works fine. Must have been something else when I tried it before. Adjusted 4 VMs and they all run much better.

First, I strongly recommend not using dynamic memory. If using it, at least set both start up and minimum vRAM to 2 GB, increase the memory buffer to 50% from default 20%, and set memory weight High:

    About the virtual processors:

A vCPU on a VM can only be used when matching thread on host CPU core is idle. This means that using the max amount of vCPUs, the VM can in fact be quite slow because its vCPUs must always wait that the thread on matching host CPU core is idle. According to my experience, the optimal host CPU core - VM vCPU ratio is 2:1, one vCPU per two host CPU cores when running multiple virtual machines at the same time. If only ever running one VM at any given time, my recommendation is to use 1:1 ratio, one vCPU per one host CPU core.

Of course. New hardware. Activation troubleshooter and phone activation usually works.

I turned off Dynamic memory on all VMs when I upped it to 4GB. Checked Process Monitor and it looks good.

Putting everything about VM optimization in one tutorial would be simply too much. I made this now, to start with: Hyper-V - Use Differencing Disks

I'll look at that when I get some time, thanks for doing it.

I have anopther question though. When I shutdown a VM I end up with this:

I really want Hyper-V to close the windows when I shutdown the VM. I don't see any options to make it do that. Is there one.

Kari might know, but I've not found one. But you don't have to leave that window open while the VM shuts down. It doesn't need the window open, you can close it yourself before the shut down has completed.

Okay, that's good to know. Thanks Bree.

What happens if I just close the window? With Oracle VB, I got a popup with 3 choices. One was Shutdown, one was Power Off and I can't remember the other. I'd like to see Hyper-V do something similar.
