Sorry all. Having a family gathering. That means NO Tech. Thank you all for responding to my question and I'll get back to this post tomorrow.

    Hi folks
You don't need a full blown OS to load any sort of Virtual machine -- as Kari and others have said you can boot and run a VHD/VHDX virtual disk -- from boot the system will attach the virtual hard drive and then run its OS.

Another way -- very tiny OS is installed is to use ESxi although that's a bit complex for beginners in Virtual Machines.

I'm not sure if using the VHD/VHDX method if you can boot Non Windows VM OS'es though.

On Linux hosts you can also use KVM or XEN as Hypervisors -- equivalent to Windows HYPER-V these will run Windows OS'es quite successfully as well.

    Loads of possibilities with VM's.

    Cheers

The tutorial you linked to shows how to boot natively to an existing Hyper-V virtual hard disk. However, it is also possible to start from scratch, install Windows to a VHD without any virtualisation software.

I use Windows 10 mainly in English (real British English, not the the colonial one!), and have installed W10 in both my native languages Finnish and Swedish on virtual hard disks:

    Attachment 239506

Because of Windows 10 digital licensing, they are automatically activated.

I've posted a video in Ten Forums video thread to show how to install Windows for dual / multi boot on a virtual hard disk:

See the video post for more details and instructions.

Thank you Kari. Very concise and straightforward. I'll play with this on one of my other systems. Again, thanks to everyone for jumping in.
