    Hyper-V and Windows 95/98?

My main goal is to be able to play: Goosebumps Escape from HorrorLand for the PC. It is a Windows 98 point and click game. I'm trying to find out whether or not it is possible for me to use HyperV to create a Windows 95/98 VM using the existing hardware that I already have, or if I just need to get really old hardware and do it that way. I've never done this particular task before so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    I have:
    Windows 10 Pro x64
    32 GB of DDR4 3000
    Intel i7-5960X CPU
    Asus Strix 1080Ti GPU
    MSI Gaming9 X99S mobo
    Asus PG348Q 3440x1440 Display

If I can't VM this task, please kindly assist me with where I might go in the Sacramento, CA area to get the hardware I need to make this happen.

    Thanks!

I don't believe you can run Windows 95 or 98 in Hyper-V, but I'm fairly sure you can by installing Virtual-Box.

First check to see if you can run this game in Compatibility mode .
Right click on the exe file that starts the program and choose properties
move over to the compatibility tab and go down to the compatibility mode and check the
box there you can select several modes under it and adjust the screens settings to match the program.

Quoting an old post of mine :

    Kari said:
Can't be done as there's no way to get mouse and keyboard working.

Hyper-V supports Windows client guests starting from Windows XP, and server guests starting from Server 2003 SP2 (read more).

The only way to make Windows 98 to work in Hyper-V is to install Windows 7 guest OS, install Microsoft Virtual PC on that Windows 7 Hyper-V vm, and finally install Windows 98 in Virtual PC. Windows 98 running in Virtual PC running on Windows 7 vm running in Windows 10; it's although doable not very practical, exactly as complicated as it sounds.

An avid Hyper-V fan as I am, exclusively using it to virtualise modern operating systems, virtualising pre XP Windows operating systems is the only reason I sometimes use VirtualBox.

    Hi there
VMWare will also Virtualize Win95 Win98 and even Win3.11 (windows for workgroups) as will VBOX.

Actually I think for adding / manipulating hardware to VM's such as various sorts of USB devices / joysticks etc I think you are better off using VMWare or VBox -- or if a Linux user and you want something akin to HYPER-V then try Linux's hypervisors XEN and / or KVM.

I find HYPER-V best for bog standard VM's where basic server or simple file sharing required - for messing around with eseoteric hard/software then (sorry kari) it's not the best choice.

Incidentally if installing under VMware or Vbox remember to install the VMWare tools or VBOX additions to the guest after first logon -- windows 98 / 95 won't know anything about HDMI / 1080p/ 4k Ultra HD size monitors -- that's what the virtual video driver will do - plus better control for sound, mouse, networking and some other enhancements.
I can assure you it's hideous looking at standard VGA on a big 50 inch 4K monitor !!! That's what you will get if you don't install vmware tools or vbox additions (might be called Oracle virtual box additions these days).

    Cheers

So, I did try compatibility mode. That will run partly, but it won't work for the SETUP.EXE I need to run for the game to work. That means I either need to get a VM working or that I need to actually build a Windows 95/98 computer. Which of these two paths do you suggest I pursue more than the other?

    1. Use VMWare/VBox to try to get Windows 95/98 going
    2. Find the hardware needed to build a Windows 95/98 machine.

"Incidentally if installing under VMware or Vbox remember to install the VMWare tools or VBOX additions to the guest after first logon -- windows 98 / 95 won't know anything about HDMI / 1080p/ 4k Ultra HD size monitors -- that's what the virtual video driver will do - plus better control for sound, mouse, networking and some other enhancements.

^This is why I'm leaning more towards actually building a Windows 95/98 system from old parts.

Someone else from another source also suggested to me that running Windows XP might be the middle ground for the game to work between Windows 10 and Windows 95. Questions based on this idea:
    Q. Will Windows XP install to an SSd, or for that matter, to an M.2 SSD?
    Q. Is there still a buy-able copy of Windows XP out there?

Right now I'm downloading VMWare Workstation 15 Pro. Is that the VM software I need?

VMware Workstation Pro is correct. Note that VMware Workstation Player is free. It has some limitations such as only being able to run a single VM at a time, but otherwise I believe it should be able to run Win 95/98 guest as well.

Right now I'm going for WindowsXP 32bit. I've created my VM, given it 10000 MB RAM, 50GB VHD, do I need an actual copy of Windows XP to do this?

    Here are my settings:

^For this screen, the only available option in the drop-down is 'Empty'.^

Yes, even for a VM, you still need to install the operating system, so you will need a copy of Windows XP.

    Questions:

    1. Do I need a CD of Windows XP and CD Drive to install it?
1a. If so, where can I buy it? I just want to make sure I get the right product I need.
    2. If not, is there a place that I can download a copy of Windows XP?
    3. If I need a CD Drive, is it alright if it is USB3.0 external?
    4. What option in the VM menus do I select to interface the copy of Windows XP with the VM?

    Thanks for the help!
