You need either a physical disc, or an ISO image of a disk. If you don't already have a licensed copy of Windows XP I'm not really sure where you get one any longer since it's no longer sold.

As an alternative, if you have a system running XP, there are a number of "P2V" conversion utilities (Physical 2 Virtual) that would let you create a VM from a physical machine.

Amazon.com has some pre-built Windows XP machines up as well as some copies of Windows XP but I'm not sure if they are valid.

Here's the link to XP itself for sale:

This computer is for sale on Amazon, for sale by Dell:

    Hi there

I believe you can extract a Windows XP VM from XP Mode -- however that route I haven't looked at for years.

If you have access to an XP running system you can take a Macrium image and then using the stand alone bootable recovery to boot a VM simply restore the XP image (configure the VM first without installing the OS ) - usually define VHD sizes, network etc and use the stand alone restore medium (the iso) to boot the restore program , attach the disk where you have your image and restore.

You might have to re-activate Windows -- not always in these circumstances --if re-activation is required you can try entering the original serial number or just activate by phone explaining you've moved the XP system to a new machine --you need XP still because you are using legacy hardware.

Ms is usually quite OK on these types of activations --they aren't worried about large scale pirating of XP now any more in any case.

    Cheers

Thanks for the support here, I really do appreciate it a lot! I think I'm gonna try buying the Windows XP pre-built computer from amazon. It's only $110 and I'd be skeptical normally but the seller is actually Dell itself which gives me more confidence in the idea. I really want to be able to play Oregon Train and Goosebumps Escape from HorrorLand and some of the older games I like and remember.

Ref. your quote about a VM within a VM. What's the record for the number of working 'daisy chained' VMs?

I have installed Deer Avenger 3 and 4 (both 98 games) as well as Sim City 3000 (win xp)
on my win 10 using compatibility mode. The Setups were run in Compat mode then I went through
the directories making sure all exe files were in compat mode. works for me.

just a side note: a licensed xp mode (which was licensed when the computer was Win 7) will survive
the upgrade to 1903 and 20hi preview

    Never tried this:

Running straight 16-bit MS-DOS 6.x in a true VM. (Not DosBox.)

    Is it possible?
