Disabling hyper V Solved

    Disabling hyper V

I apparently need to disable hyper v in my updated windows 10 home to get my virtual box vms to work. Would disabling hyper v remove any other windows 10 features? In other words, is there a downside to disabling hyper v?

This is a new laptop. The reason why I could no longer run Virtualbox was not hyper v but that virtualization was turned off in the bios. I switched virtualization to enabled and now all is well. So my question does not apply. But a question arises. What would virtualization be disabled by default in a W10 laptop with Intel 5 cpu? What advantage does disabling virtualization give the laptop?

I believe that Hyper-V is not available in Window 10 HOME versions. Only PRO versions. Since your Laptop has HOME on it, I presume that the manufacture turned that feature off in BIOS.

Actually, Home has the ability to manage Hyper-V VMs on another PC running Pro, so it has the Hypervisor Platform available in Windows Features, but not Hyper-V itself.

On further investigation it seems I was mistaken. Sorry.

I must have confused it with Remote Desktop Connection, where Home can connect to other machines but not be connected to.

There are some potential security vulnerabilities associated with enabling virtualization. At the present time these vulnerabilities are more theoretical than real but that may change. Some manufacturers prefer to err on the side of caution and leave the option disabled by default. As most people won't need it and it is easily enabled if needed this is quite reasonable. Other manufacturers have the option on by default.

That is very helpful. I'm no expert but it would seem to be easy to have the best of both worlds by having virtualization enabled but having Windows ask you for permission every time it's invoked. (Maybe it does).

Virtualization in this context is a processor, not a Windows feature. If it were enabled malware would be able to use it without Windows knowledge, let alone ability to intervene. Modern malware is VERY sophisticated and very good at evading various types of protection. For technical reasons virtualization can only be enabled or disabled in the BIOS before Windows starts.

Thank you for taking the time to explain.
    Very scary.
