    No sound in VMware Linux Mint

    I have installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon (3.8.9) within VMware Workstation 14 Player (version 14.1.3 build-9474260) running on a Windows 10 host (1803 build 17134.285). Sound does not work, although it works perfectly when I run Windows 7 in the same VM.
    The sound device detected by Linux is Creative Sound blaster CT2518. When I test sound with pavucontrol open on the Output Devices tab, the Advanced bar shows that the sound is being detected, but nothing can be heard.
    Can anyone suggest how I can overcome this problem?

    Try to disable and enable again the sound device using vmware menu (while VM is already booted) then it should work.

    Hi there

    Check on the VM config (from the HOST with the VM running) -- see if sound card is connected

    sometimes sound card starts disconnected -- simply connect it from the VMware menu

    Then check within the VM if sound is working via whatever sound mixer app you have you have

    for me on centos it's as follows (KDE is my GUI on this VM but it's similar using other GUI's).

    I'd boot the Linux Mint LiveDVD [same disc used for installing] and see if there's support for sound in it, helps to determine whether hardware or software issue.

    Hi there

    Of course check sound works on HOST as well and volume on HOST is turned up !!! I assume you've done that but sometimes these little things are forgotten.

    Incidentally a get around that works on pretty well all Linux systems with sound problems if you must have sound on the VM is to get a really cheap USB sound / mic adapter -- they work just fine with no drivers usually needed at all - attach to the VM and your sound should work - if you want wireless sound simply connect blu tooth transmitter to the output on the usb adapter.

    Around 7 EUR / GBP (Inc tax)

    here on amazon UK link

    Sabrent USB External Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows and Mac. Plug and play No drivers Needed. [Black] (AU-MMSA): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories

    I've a couple which work brilliantly on my NAS (CENTOS Linux) based servers that don't have sound cards in them.

    Don't usually need sound on a server but sometimes it's OK. !! if doing a lot of work on servers etc.

    No sound in VMware Linux Mint

    Many thanks to roy111, jimbo45 and Berton for the responses - unfortunately they did not help. However I came across a solution at no sound device for Linux mint |VMware Communities
    This involved editing the Linux Mint vmx file by changing its last line to;
    sound.fileName="-1"
    and adding a new line:
    sound.autodetect="TRUE"
    This worked perfectly, and I now have full sound.
