Linux VM - Virtual switch - How do I connect from another machine

    Hi there

help @Kari please --you must be getting sick of this but thanks really appreciate your time - networking isn't my strong speciality !!!

I'll go back to the previous post once I'm all sorted

    but got a question here

ifconfig for the VM shows address as 172.18.10.143

Linux VM - Virtual switch - How do I connect from another machine-ip.png

want I need is an address like 192.168.0.xx

Do I need to set up Virtual switch or whatever -- this is the part where I'm stuck

I can logon to the VM from the HYPER-V connect panel on the Host but I can't access or even see it on any other machines on the LAN although the VM has full Internet capability (Firefox) so that's working.

I need to get an address of something like 192.168.0.xx (or whatever DHCP on your router dishes our as real IP addresses).

XRDP / tight VMC servers all working on the Linux VM so RDP from windows should work but the IP address is bonkers !!!

    cheers

Those 172 IPs are used by default switch which puts the VM behind NAT. To use same subnet than your host, a VM must use another external switch.

On Windows guests, although networking per se is not available when guest uses default switch, you can still map network shares from host and other computers on host subnet.

Just create an external switch and use it instead on your Linux guests. See Part 3 in Hyper-V tutorial: Hyper-V virtualization - Setup and Use in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

    Hi there

    @Kari
realized that after seeing the default uses NAT -- created external switch --fine now

was too quick on the mouse clicks --I should read menus etc more slowly !!!

Rest should be plain sailing now

    BTW for Centos

    1) TYPE 2 fails to boot, Type 1 OK

    2) can't use enhanced mode -- so to get decent screen resolution instead of default (853 X 111?? or something weird) as su use grubby to set to 1920 X 1080 for laptop full screen

Sound as stated - problem but not bothered yet -- might mess around with XRDP / VMC server on the VM to bring it across from Windows via bog standard RDP.

    Thanks for all help

    Marking as solved.

    Cheers

About remoting from Windows to Linux VM, I made this using Windows 10 RDP client to connect to remote host Centos 7, and vice versa.

From tutorial RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC | Windows 10 Tutorials. Might still be valid, although I think you do not need instructions…

@jimbo45, I forgot to answer to the above quoted part.

Hyper-V supports Generation 2 Centos and Red Hat guests. It's just that when creating a Generation 2 virtual machine, it will automatically be created with Secure Boot enabled. You need to disable it in VM settings before booting the Linux VM.
